First game was last night for us. Teams kept their balls on their sidelines. A few long plays with no issues getting the ball set. Latest we got a ball down was 27 seconds. Play clock guy was awesome. We had a very very low passing game and were done in 2 hours and 3 minutes. Been a few years since I have been in one that was done that quick.

We didn't have any issues using the 40 / 25 tonight, and the game went really smooth. Only one of the teams put ballboys on both sidelines.
We have one private school we service that shares a stadium with their local high school. Since the public school doesn't have a home game until Week 3, the clocks won't be upgraded until that week. There was some talk about using the 25s clocks but having the BJ count off the first 15 then signal the 25 to start. I'll have to ask that crew what they ended up doing (I would have turned the clocks off and just used my watch).

It's been a couple of years since I last used a 40 second clock but last night I realized why I like it. There is no time for coaches to yell at you over a perceived missed call. Previously we'd be delaying the 25 second clock while getting chewed on, but now with the clock running they don't have time too. Or could it be that we just did a good job and they had nothing to complain about. ;D

Both teams put ballboys on both sides. (both teams went "fast") No issues with them being molested. Made things go much smoother (once I got the U broke from plays going to Team A sideline for a ball after long inc passes). Dude, you are defeating the purpose of having balls from each team on ea sideline. Just look to the sideline closest to where ball is going to be put in play and get the ball from them.
Did have an issue with play clock operator at end of game that gummed up the works but not sure we could have handled it any differently.
A was up 13-12 and trying to eat the clock as B had no timeouts. Got down to 4th and 5 with 45 seconds left at the end of 3d down run play. Clock operator delayed until 41 were left on game clock before starting play clock. Of course A looked at the clocks as numbers were changing and assumed it could go to 0 and game would be over. Backjudge had already signalled to me there was a one sec difference in the clocks. I thought they would ask for a timeout when there were 1 or 2 secs left on play clock. They did not. It hit 0 and Backjudge whistles and flags while A has already stormed off the field to start the celebration as game clock had also hit 0 before Backjudge could signal. So we have to the dreaded "no it is not over yet" and get them back out and clock reset to 1 second. I had not thought about the situation before but in retrospect I guess I could have shut everything down right after he started the 40 second play clock and had the game clock reset to 44 and play clock to 40 and then started both. That would have made it much clearer that they would have to snap.

Same play clock situation in the middle of the 3rd quarter. Would you have shut it down and fixed the game clock?
-
No way. But the world was watching the clocks at the end of the game.

Very good point, Jason. I noticed that too. We had to screw ups but we managed to work through them. It really kept the game moving along and running much more consistently.

Mike I think the national convention is to retrieve a new ball on the side the pass goes incomplete. Keeps number of balls on each side even.

I am not worried about keeping the balls even, I am worried about my U running himself into the ground. He is near one hash when play ends, runs to other side to get the relay from the flank, and then runs to the hash were he was to get it down. There were 4 ballboys on each side. They can work together to get balls balanced
-
We were consistent with the ball last night in the 7-9 sec average. Home team had ball boys on each side and it took us a few series to get everything worked out with the H and the home team ball boys on the visitor side, but if the home team was on offense, U would get the ball from the sideline he was closest too.
We had two timing problems. Once he failed to start the 40, and once we didn't reset it to 40 for a defensive injury. Other than that, things went smooth and no real issues with the 40/25
-
The biggest issues I've seen thus far have been the reluctance to start the 40 after incomplete passes...and the reluctance to start the game clock so quickly after the ball is set for 1st down. Friday night, they never ran a 1st down clock until the chains were set.

We had to shut down the play clock in the middle of the 1st qtr because of malfunction. Wrong template loaded or some other. I loaned my ReadyRef timer to the B before the game and it all worked out great. I felt as if the game was actually slower moving with the 40.
-
If it was actually slower that would likely mean your R used to make ball Ready For Play 8-10 secs after it was dead

We had a lot of issues with the PCO in a game on Friday. I asked, early in the week, for the PCO to meet with us pre game, but they had already had a game on Thursday and the PCO felt like he did not need a meeting, so he did not show up for the Friday game until 15 min prior to kickoff. Needless to say, we had major issues. Thursday crew was a good bit less experienced I guess and they informed the PCO that the 40 clock did not start until after the ball was placed on the ground and everyone had walked away. He also had no clue what the single hand pump meant. I sent word during the first qtr that I needed talk to someone that could get with the PCO and get it all right. At the half, my L went to the press box, in an attempt to get things straight. He even had the "cheat sheet" stating when the clock should be on 25, and the crew the night before told him totally different stuff. Needless to say, we had a lot of troubles.

Thurs crew was from same Chapter?
-
Yes. Bad thing is, we have gone over it and over it and we still had some not get it! Meeting tonight and it will be gone over again!!!!!!

We had the ball spotted quickly the entire game, no issues even on long plays. Both teams were using the whole 40 it seemed and thus the pace of the game seemed slower.
-
My point was that if your R (last year) was making the ball RFP within 8-10 secs after dead then each play would take 33 - 35 secs max to get off. But with the 40 sec clock, it might be taking 40 sec per play
