PAT team comes in and sets up with only 10. 2 other Team A players then run to the formation, 1 goes ahead and assumes a position but the 2d realizes he was not supposed to be in so turns around when he gets to the hash and then runs back off the field. He never communicated with anyone. Foul?

Personally I would pass on it. I assume you are saying it is PAT and they are kicking it.
If it was a 2 point attempt then I might look at it differently.

I assume that if flagged it would be under 3-5-2-d
"Substitutes who become players must remain in the game for one play and replaced
players must remain out of the game for one play, except during the interval between
periods, after a score, or when a timeout is charged to a team or to the referee with the
exception of a live ball out of bounds or an incomplete forward pass (A.R. 3-5-2:III and
VII)"
So in this case it was after a score so wouldn't apply anyway?

Did the sub become a player?

Did he enter the field of play or end zone and communicate with a teammate or an official, enter the huddle, or take a position in an offensive or a defensive formation? Doesn't sound like it from the description given. I've got nothing.

This is something we see in Britain all the time. I generally also consider two-way exchanges along the lines of "Am I supposed to be in?" "NO! GO AWAY!" to not be communicating, because it only slows Team A down and it's obvious to Team B what's happening.

Happens all the time in Brasil too. 9 out of 10 4th down plays have this kind of mistake happening. We usually warn the teams about it instead of flagging it.

4. First and 10 at the B-40. Team A runs a no-huddle offense and their players move to their various positions. After the ball has been made ready for play substitute A22 runs from his team area on to the field of play. He pauses at the top of the numbers and then realizes that he is the 12th man, so he turns and hustles back to his team area. The ball has not been snapped.
a. No foul.
b. This would be a substitution foul only if A22 had remained on the field for more than three seconds.
c. Foul for illegal substitution. After the penalty Team A will have first and 15.
d. Foul for illegal substitution. After the penalty Team A will have first and 10.

COMMENTS: A22 has become a player in the sense of Rule 3-5-2. The foul takes place between series and the penalty is enforced after the line to gain has been established since the ball had been made ready for play.

The orig play is different in that it was a PAT and the player never paused. Not sure of those would man anything to Rogers Redding but just some differences

I would agree with TXMike. I read the Quiz 2 play to imply that the incoming sub has by rule become a player when he pauses before then leaving (he's "taken a position"). In the original play here the incoming sub never pauses but simply turns around and immediately leaves. IMO he has not become a player as defined by Rule 2. Also, I believe that we need to note that the original PAT play is not a hurry-up no-huddle situation.
