Title: BC coach runs into chain crew
Post by: sjzref on December 28, 2014, 01:22:00 PM
Anyone see BC coach run into chain crew and then slap him during Pinstripe Bowl?

If he keeps all of his players out of the coaching box he doesn't have the problem. Would have liked to seen the chain guy slap him back.

I think it was more of a swat than a slap.  I'd have wished he vent the stake over his head.  Too many of these guys get to act like an BUTT with no repercussions.

In a bowl game a few years ago, had a former Univ of Houston coach get mad at our chain crew because we stopped the game due to the chain coming off the stake.  He said, "we want to go fast and you guys have to keep up."  I turned around and told him "we can keep up if your coaches and players would stay out of the white and not step on the chains."  He didn't say another word to us, but still didn't control his sideline, and for that matter neither did the flank official.

In this situation I would have reminded the coach that he should be behind the chains and said it loud enough for the flank official to hear it too.  I would have run into him every chance I got the rest of the game when he was in the white.

Thankfully, the chain crew member was taught manners a lot better than the fool masquerading as a coach, and didn't wrap his chain stake around the coach's neck.  Hopefully, those in charge of this school's football program will take the time to teach this idiot what his parents failed to do.

Pretty sure that's a foul for contacting an official.

I would love to be a coach recruiting against this guy and have this video.

Why isn't this an ejection for striking a game official?

By rule, a member of the chain crew is not an official.

I don't find it in the current rule book, but I am almost certain in older rule books it stated the chain crew WAS part of the officiating crew.

The definition isn't clear but there are several references in the book where "official" clearly has to mean one of the 7 or 8 guys in stripes.

FR-8 on Sideline Control lists "game operations staff members" and specifically mentions chain crew, ball persons, official media liaisons, and technicians responsible for coach-to-press box communications.
