Title: Field Goals - uprights extended - Need rule reference NCAA vs. NFHS
Post by: hefnerjm on August 17, 2016, 10:29:35 AM
I know this should be initiative, but I cant find the answer in the NCAA book. Can anyone provide a clear rule reference or AR for NCAA when the ball passes above the uprights?

Rule 8 SECTION 4. Field Goal
How Scored
ARTICLE 1.
a. A field goal shall be scored for the kicking team if a drop kick or place kick passes over the crossbar between the uprights of the receiving team’s goal before it touches a player of the kicking team or the ground. The kick shall be a scrimmage kick but may not be a free kick.
b. If a legal field goal attempt passes over the crossbar between the uprights and is dead beyond the end line or is blown back but does not return over the crossbar and is dead anywhere, it shall score a field goal. The crossbar and uprights are treated as a line, not a plane, in determining forward progress of the ball.

NHFS 8-4-1c
-For the kick to be successful:
the ball must pass in flight above the opponent's crossbar
it must also be between the uprights
-if the ball travels above the uprights
the entire ball must pass between the inside of the uprights extended

Pause at 0:38 seconds:
Part of the ball passes through the inside of the upright extended.  No Score

Not 100% sure what you're looking for but the rule you quoted is pretty much all there is.  If the ball does not cross between the uprights then the attempt is no good.  The uprights, for the purpose of this rule are viewed as infinitely high and if above the height of the actual upright, it's the officials judgment call to decide if the ball passed "between the uprights", not over the upright.

The result is correct, but the narration is confusing.  Substitute "outside" for "inside" & it will make more sense.
