Title: Inadvertant Whistle Questions
Post by: CenTexZebra on August 28, 2016, 10:06:08 AM
I know it is not a good thing but, it happened, twice!

JV game so it was a learning experience for new official. Two very similar plays, but also different.

Team A punts, team B is returning the kick. Team B blocks in the back at the B30 and the ball is at the B25 and the wing official throws the flag for IBB and blows whistle at the same time. What is the ruling?

1) Team A will most likely accept the penalty for B's fouls. B 1/10 at the B-15. If they don't, B can take the result of the play or replay the down.

2) B can choose to replay the down or more likely, accept A's foul, B 1/10 at the B-40.

The issue isn't working a play with the whistle in your mouth, many NFL officials work that way. The whole "this ain't basketball" is stupid.

NFL officials have proven their ability to control their whistle and blow it at the correct times.

I think the "new official" mentioned in the OP may not have developed that in his skill set yet...taking the whistle out of his mouth may give him the extra 1/2 second to slow down his whistle and avoid more IWs.

I highly doubt they worked their entire career one way then got to the NFL and decided to start working with the whistle in their mouth. Earth shattering advice here: don't blow the whistle until it's time to blow the whistle.

And I highly doubt they were born with the whistle in their mouth. New officials do not need to do this. It is a huge help in order to avoid the aforementioned situations.

Just reffin. Had to chime on the peeps that think the reason they had an IW is because they work with the whistle in their mouth. They're prolly the same liberals that blame the gun.

Terrible assumption. I'm a conservative that knows the gun won't accidentally fire so long as one's finger isn't near the trigger.

The same conservative that doesn't brandish a weapon unless I've already made the choice to fire.

Quit sitting on your shoulders.
