Title: Pregame Meeting with Coaches
Post by: TexDoc on September 23, 2016, 09:30:49 AM
This may be covering old ground, but still curious.  In the pregame meeting with coaches, does your entire crew go or just R and U?

We all go, and each will have a designated set of subjects to discuss:

R: Opens the meeting, talks about sportsmanship (quickly, nothing elaborate), asks for captains names/numbers, legally equipped, usual stuff

U: Asks for casts/equipment that needs checked, etc

LJ/HL (whoever is on that side): says "I'll be on your side", confirms HC is only one calling timeout, feel free to come out of box to call TO if needed, asks about get back coach, tells him we'll get penalty info as soon as we can though it may take a play or two.

BJ: Tells him he'll have the play clock, will give verbal and hand help high countdown

R: Wrap up and answering any questions.

Whole thing is generally under 5 mins

R/U:  If it takes me more than 2 mins. with each coach then something went very wrong.

During a coaches meeting?  Game balls?  No that's done separately.

I don't even get captain information any longer. There's no need. I talk to whoever the three or four they send out to the coin flip. I don't use captains for penalty enforcement. 95% of penalties are self enforced. If I'm unsure I ask the coach directly. Works out well.

I (R) go with the U and the wing on the coach's sideline. However, the wing makes a quick intro, a reminder about the sideline rule, get's the get back coach's name, the ball boy's name and where he is, and he's gone. Then the U does his equipment thing and gets the signed UIL notice thing, I ask about any pregame/halftime situations (home) and ask the coach if he has anything for us. I also get the QBs name/number and my U gets the Center's info.

I've given up on the captains numbers (they walk out), district (positive points), QB hand/kicker's foot, etc. We'll figure all that out soon enough.

I'm not concerned with the captains either.  I will ask for the QB's name and who the team leader on defense is.  It helps to know their name for any situations that you don't really need to get the coach involved with.  Then I also get the ball persons names.  Other than that, I'm just there to show my face so they know that there will be officials for the game.

I go with just the U.  It happens rarely, but occasionally the coach will ask why just the R and U.   I usually say those guys bringing the entire crew are just doing it wrong.  I've notice when you bring the entire crew the conference lasts too long. There isn't much reason to ask for captains numbers because we always get the option on penalties from the coaches.  Using radios makes that very quick. Also, is there really a reason to get coaches to sign the equipment certification after the first couple of weeks?   If they sign one it seems that's good enough for the entire season.  I usually lose the darned things anyway. Keep it quick and simple and be sure to let the coach tell you of any concerns or ask questions.

Except for those pesky rules. :-)

And that silly lawsuit that happens if somebody gets hurt because they weren't wearing something. CYA and let the lawyers go after the coaches.

I challenge someone to find one of those certifications from last year.  Lets say the first Thursday JV game you worked in September of 2015.

Exactly my point Jason.  I might be able to find one the next day, maybe.   Beyond that, it's doubtful.  Also, has anyone ever had to refer back to one?   Ever?   It just seems that if they sign one and turn it in to the local chapter you're covered.  Not that big of a deal.

Perhaps it is time for a change in the way coaches certify their players. Make every football coach in the state (all levels)  sign the form with copies on file with the central office of the district and with the UIL. The UIL likes to micromanage so let them handle this and remove this hassle from the officials.

I thought the coaches carts were supposed to be turned into the chapter secretary?

Not that I ever did!

That's never been requested and would be a nightmare for the secretary or whoever collects them.  Looking at all of the varsity and sv my chapter does, they would have to hold on to thousands of cards.  I can imagine it would be huge in Houston.

My thinking on the cards is to get them signed, and if there are no major injuries during the game, then they go in the trash when I get home.  If there is an injury significant enough to be mentioned in the game report, then I would keep them in a file.  Just a CYA imo.

I think TASO needs to push the UIL toward this -- one form signed at the beginning of the year for all teams, emailed and/or sent to UIL as a condition of playing football. Once the form is filed, that school can be assigned officials. OR, just say appearance on a field with a team is defacto certification.

Doing it week by week makes no sense other than UIL wants TASO to take responsibility.

R and U only

And for those who advocate signing the card once at start of season.....maybe you could send in a rule change request to Rogers Redding that he change 1-4-9   This is NOT a UIL deal.  This is a NCAA deal.  So maybe you could suggest a UIL Exception.

We always had the R and U meet the coaches. Often it was in the locker room well before the game.

And as Mike said, NCAA rules requires the coaches sign before the game. Not much you can do with that unless the UIL created an exception.

Mike, how long has 1-4-9 been written the way it is presently?  For many, many years, we didn't get it in writing before the game.  There's probably a lot of things we do in high school that don't align to college but we don't have UIL exceptions to cover.  With that said, sure, I would really like to see the UIL be the cops on this deal.

No  From the first year the rule change came in, we made it a part of the requirements for our officials also.

We also have a rule in the NCAA rulebook that states if a player is ejected for targeting in the second half of a game, he is suspended for the 1st half of the next game but we dont enforce that in UIL. Just make an exception to the rule that says the card is turned in before the season and not every game.
