To my understanding in year's past an 8th man, in full uniform (with maybe a jacket on) would follow the game on the sidelines and in essence step in should someone get hurt.
Now that conferences are using 8-man crews has the extra guy gone away?

Not sure about other conferences but I know the Big Ten still has an alternate who is stationed with one of the replay headsets.  He comes in if someone gets hurt.

That is the Alternate Official.  I believe the power 5 conferences all have alternates.  Some of the other conferences don't have alternates (Mountain West for example).
