Title: Old Mechanics, or something weird?
Post by: ncwingman on November 07, 2016, 08:21:48 PM
I'm watching a "classic" game on ESPN from Ye Olde 2007 and I'm noticing a strange mechanic and I'm wondering what is going on.

On the press box side of the field, behind the LJ on the LOS there is an official with an "S" uniform. There are two officials stacked up on the LOS. As far as I can tell, there are still the two deep wings (SJ on the HL side, FJ on the LJ side).

Who is that guy (the second side judge?) and what is he doing there?

Alternate not wearing a cover?

That would be my guess, too. The AO was probably (albeit unofficially) serving as a backup to mark the LOS.

ISTR the SEC going through a period of using the AO on the LOS during the down.

They've been using that mechanic for years. Nothing new here.
