What is overall feeling about a HS 5 man crew picking up two college officials to work deep wing when they haven't worked any HS games during the regular season?
-
Assuming they are TASO members and have fulfilled all requirements , rock on

High School officials generally struggle with 7 man mechanics so I see this as a plus to pick up some experienced with 7 man

As Mike said, if they meet all of the local and TASO requirements, I don't see why not. It may not be entirely "fair," but that's a bit subjective. My chapter requires everyone to work at least 5 sub varsity Thursday, attend a certain number of meetings and to meet TASO state requirements (test done on time, dues paid, attend an educational clinic). If college guys can meet those requirements, why not.

Isn't this one reason why Houston went to regular 7-man crews?
I don't have a real problem with the practice as long as they are TASO members in good standing.

I wasn't implying that this happening, just asking a question. I have heard rumors about this in other chapters, but I don't know for sure.

I agree that this is fine so long as the officials meet the chapter/TASO requirements. In an effort to curb this however, we offer seven man training in the offseason and encourage guys to attend in order to get the mechanics down and some snaps in scrimmages. We don't guarantee that they will get to work in the playoffs, but it at least gets them some exposure and some snaps so that they are somewhat prepared should they get the opportunity. This year that came primarily in the first and second round. As it gets deeper and the stakes get higher, the officials with the most experience, typically college officials, will be the ones getting the calls to work.

Gotcha. I'm out of the loop these days on the left coast which is why I asked.
