Title: Georgia/GA Tech injury runoff
Post by: BrendanP on December 23, 2016, 10:27:09 PM
I was watching the replay of the Georgia/Georgia Tech game from a few weeks ago, and this situation came up and my gut told me this didn't sound right, so I figured I'd ask the experts.

The score is tied 14-14, UGA ball, 1st and 10 at UGA 9 yard line, :56 remaining in the second quarter. UGA hands off up the middle for a gain of 4 yards, and a GT player is injured, for which the officials stopped the clock and announced an injury timeout with :45 remaining on the game clock.

R announces that Georgia has elected not to use a timeout, therefore 10 second runoff applies.

3-3-5 F-4 states, "There is no option for a 10-second runoff if there are injuries to opposing players." Does this mean in this case there should not have been any option for a runoff, or is it possible that UGA had the option, but should not have had to burn a timeout if they wished to preserve the 10 seconds?

Your reference talks to players on both teams having injuries on the same play.  In this case GA would have the option to invoke the 10 sec run off. Not sure what he meant by that announcement.

I'll bet he meant "Georgia Tech".  I'm sure they applied the rule correctly.
