Title: Illegal Wedge Penalty Enforcement Question
Post by: bctgp on August 19, 2017, 08:11:07 PM
A fellow official and I are stumped by this.  Under illegal wedge formation penalty enforcement info (Rule 6-1-10), the last part about PREVIOUS SPOT enforcement if Team A has possession of dead ball.  I'm trying to understand a scenario for this. Seems like Team A would decline the foul and take the ball.

Only scenarios we could think of are listed below but I would think they are very, very rare.

1) if Team A gets possession of a turnover downfield near its end zone, ...such that they would rather re-kick and lose possession, seems very rare.
2) have a safety against them, or
3) try an onside kick late in the game after the 15-yard penalty.

Any more likely scenarios where this might happen?

I believe the scenarios you presented cover the possibilities.  If Team A will next snap the ball, then they would decline this penalty 99.9% of the time.  As you noted, the possible scenarios where they would want to accept the penalty would be extremely rare, but possible; thus, the option in the rule to accept the penalty at the previous spot under those conditions.
