Title: Holding During Lose Ball End of Run is in EZ
Post by: TexDoc on October 10, 2017, 09:33:28 AM
1/10 from A-15.  A12 takes snap and looks to pass and is hit by B33 at the A-5 where the ball becomes loose and rolls back into A's end zone.  In a scramble to get the ball:

A:  B33 holds A12 in the end zone so team mate B45 can get possession of the fumble.  B45 recovers the ball and is downed in the EZ.

B:  A12 holds B33 in the end zone so A64 can get possession of the fumble. A64 recovers the ball and is downed in the EZ.

A: Result of the play is a touchdown. Basic spot is the previous spot, as the end of the related run is behind the NZ. Foul by the defense, so enforce from the basic spot. 1/10 A-25. Choice is obvious.

B: Foul by team A in their own end zone while they are in possession. Safety. Team A F/K A-20. No option as the result of the play is a safety, too.

For "A":
The pure result of the play is an apparent touchdown for B.
The accepted penalty for the holding foul by B would be a Basic Spot/3 and 1 enforcement.  The foul occurs during a running play that ends behind the neutral zone.  The previous spot is the Basic Spot, and fouls by the opponents of the team in possession (at the time of the foul) are penalized from the Basic Spot.  10 yards, repeat the down.  A, 1/10, A-25 (clock starts on the snap, because of the apparent score by B).

For "B":
The pure result of the play is a safety - 2 points for B.
If accepted, the penalty for the holding foul by A would also result in a safety - 2 points for Team B (by rule).
A, Free Kick, A-20.

So, what do you do as the Referee?  Safety as result of the play and decline the penalty?  Or safety by penalty?  Doesn't really matter to us - but those keeping stats may want to record the official yardage (lost by A) by the result of the play, that would not be recorded if the penalty is accepted.  Seriously.  Had a team complain when we rang up the safety by penalty on a similar situation - they wanted to be able to claim the lost yardage for their defensive stats.  Really.

Thanks guys.  Just trying to revive some rule 10 thoughts and discussion.  I had a play in my high school game last Friday that got me thinking.

If the game clock expired during the down it might matter. You know that, but somebody else might not :)

GREAT POINT!

Wasn't thinking that, at the time, but yeah, Team B might want/need to accept the safety by penalty to force the free kick in the extended period for wind reasons, or for one last shot at scoring in second or fourth periods.

You go guy!
