Title: How Competitive Were Your Games?
Post by: FLAHL on November 06, 2018, 12:34:16 PM
Our regular season is over, and our games ended up like this:

2 - extremely competitive (one score games that weren't decided until late in Q4, 1 actually went to OT)

2 - moderately competitive (not blowouts, close at the half, but decided before Q4)

8 - mercy rule (one team ahead by 35 or more at some point in the second half)

Hopefully you had closer games than we did.

I don't really keep specific records for each game unless I'm the R but I've said for years that there is an imbalance.  Maybe 2-3 games per season, and that includes JV and MS level, are a one score or less spread.  Most seem to be a 3-4 TD differential.  Maybe a couple of mine reach running clock status, which here is a 42 point lead after halftime.

Had 2 games that were blowouts, 6 that were competitive, and 2 (in a 3-week stretch) that were decided by a last-second FG.

Not bad for my last season as a full-time onfield official!

I've run stats over the scores in the HS league (128 teams) I am in here in Western PA.  For two years, the stats hold basically true:

Odds of getting a 1 score game (8 points or less): 16%
Odds of getting a 2 score game (16 points or less, which also includes the 1 score games): 35%

So, you have a 65% chance of having a crappy game.

Thanks Guys.  Bossman, my games were an exact fit with your historical averages, and it sounds like the other guys were close as well.

Good luck Bama!  You're definitely going out on a high note.

The super-conference (almost 100 teams i think) in my area realigns divisions every 2 years in an attempt to create balance. They base it off your previous three year record i think.

It helps by letting struggling programs play other struggling programs and lets power house teams play other power houses. In general it has been a good system.

Doesn't always work out though, one private school had been really successful and was placed in the top division for this year. Last off-season they had some issues which resulted in a huge chunk of their team leaving. They are not the caliber team they had been and had to play a brutal schedule. I think they've scored 2 touchdowns all year. And there's no relief in sight since they won't realign until after next season.

We don't have mercy rule in SC, but I have had 3 competitive games this whole year:

Last regular season game was 8-0
About mid-season, had #7 vs #10 and it was about a good game until the 4th when the home team started to pull away
Start of region play had a team battle back from 2 scores down to win in the 4th.

Just ran them again for this year so far and I get

1 score: 17%
2 score: 29%

Round these parts, round1 of playoffs are tonight.
If history is an indicator of the future, there will not be many competitive games. - even though the state did re-vamp the playoff qualification procedure that looked at quality of opponents vs strictly at district records.

Had three really good games including two game winning scores with less than a minute left.

Had five running clock games (had one really bad team three times)

Hoping tonight's playoff game down I4 is a good one!

In 49 years of doing this, I've found the following......

(1) A game with two "not-so-good" teams are often more fun to do than a game with a great team and a "not-so-good" team.
(2) As the subs appear in a lopsided game, I try to remember that this is still a big game for them as they try to move up their team's depth charts.
(4) Safety is still just as important when the score is 50-0 then when it was 0-0.
(5) The distance between the "haves" and "have-nots" is becoming greater.
