Title: Playoff Crew selection process for Div II, Div III
Post by: BoBo on November 14, 2018, 06:49:46 PM
Been having conversations lately on how playoff crews are selected.  Conference assignors are allowed to choose two crews to submit as possible playoff crews.  The big question is do the assignors in your conference submit crews who have worked together all season? Do they submit All Star crews meaning the choose the top official at each position?  Choose say a partner crew, like the the R and U from crew, the deep guys all from the same crew, short wings from same crew; thus creating some familiarity with each other??

Does the NCAA selection committee who selects the crew have mandatory requirements of it has to be a regular crew?

Just seeking some answers

My Conference the assigner submitted 3 mixed crews.  The mixed crews are 7 man crew plus alternate from 2 or 3 regular season crews.  We also did not work the full season as a single crew.  Typical games had 5 of 7 from the crew with the 5 changing each game.

My conference assigner also submitted mixed crews.  We worked in crews during the regular season (they did not switch during the year), but playoff crews are submitted based on performance at each position.

Mixed.  Basically it's whoever the assignor wants to send.  No formal grading with us.

For those of you that have worked a playoff game in your pregame with meeting the night before with the coaches and ncaa reps is it ever asked if you are a crew or all star crew?  If so when you answer is there any concern or not.

I agree with the above you need to take your best guys or your 1s and 2s and create crew.  Whether worked all season or not.  If they are that solid it should make no difference.

Admittedly, I have limited experience, but no one asked how the crew was formed in our meeting last Friday.

My whole crew was selected with one substitute. That was only because he had work and wasnt available on our game date. By and large, I think the entire crews are submitted from my coordinator.

I have worked several playoffs and a DII National Champ game.  Our crew was selected by coordinator.  At the pregame meetings we were not asked if we were a crew or an allstar crew.  We simply introduced ourselves and our position.

Does anyone know how the selection goes for later rounds in D2?    What are the most important factors given your crew has worked an early round game already?

I'm not sure about the D2 process, but Mark Baltz discusses the D3 process at 24:30 in the following podcast:
