I understand that this is an officiating forum and not a legal one, but is anybody able to shed some light to what the legal basis for this lawsuit is? I could understand the Saints having legal standing to sue NFL for damages to their business (as they have a contract with NFL that I guess says something to the effect that NFL provides the officials who will act according the game rules), but how come a single unrelated attorney is able to do that?
Just a confused Finn, whose native legal system is different from the US system

Unfortunately it is far too easy to sue here. Want some laughs , here is the filing in all its glory to include identification of the “back up judge” who missed the foul https://tribwgno.files.wordpress.com/2019/01/nfl-petition-for-writ.pdf (https://tribwgno.files.wordpress.com/2019/01/nfl-petition-for-writ.pdf)
And the reason for the suit - See page 4 but basically-Damages include "past, present and future anguish and emotional trauma," "loss of faith" in the NFL, "loss of enjoyment of life" and "distrust of the game."

You'd think a licensed attorney would have better command of the English language. That sounds like something a junior high student would compose, thinking he was some kind of legal scholar. Horrible.
