Worked games at DB when it had "grass." Not good. The best conditions then was when we had about 2" of snow in temperatures so cold none of it melted. The snow made a very nice "cushion" on the field. Plastic grass fixed all that. I love plastic grass.

When you work in the Panhandle, you always take everything you have because you may leave town in short sleeve weather But by game time it can be long sleeve weather or worse.

Hope they have the pressbox nice and toasty for me tonight...nothing like making mistakes on the game clock when you are shivering so much LOL
I know I will be bringing my cardigan and a pair of gloves just in case ;D

Many moons ago, worked a game in Perryton. We left Amarillo and it was sunny and about 70. Got to the site, dressed in short sleeves, went out did our pregame activities on field and went back to the field house. When we came back out it was snowing, back in to change to cold weather gear. Wound up with 6” of snow before half time.

tR: Worked a game many years ago in Lewisville, Ar in September and right after the game started it started sleeting. We liked to have froze because all we had was short sleeves. Always wanted to work one game in the snow but never had the opportunity

Where is all this global warming stuff? In all my career I have never wore the long sleeve shirt so soon. We broke ours out 2 weeks ago and forecasts show we will keep them to the end ofbthe season. Normally we don't wear them until the final week. 20 degrees windchill today.

Mid-40's last night in the DFW area at our 7th-grade games. Drizzle with numerous bouts of lightning delays and pouring rain-drenched to the bone and we almost finished the 4th qtr of seconds game before lightning hit again with drenching rain and coaches called it. I admire all my fellow officials who go out and work under all challenging weather conditions. THANK YOU!

Last night was miserable in DFW. I welcome the coming global warming apocalypse at this point....
Over the last couple of years, I don't think I have worn long sleeves 3x total in the regular season.... this year I would have worn long sleeves for 3 varsity games before the end of the regular season.

You all have given me a good chuckle in reviewing the posts regarding wearing long-sleeves. Yes, it has been cold enough for long sleeves. In the Panhandle I remember doing a game specifically on September 12th about 6-8 years ago when a cold front was predicted to come through so we all packed our sleeves. Low and behold, at approximately 6PM the temperatures dropped from 70 to 40 in about an hour period with winds blowing 25-35. That made the wind chill around 25-30 degrees. That's the earliest I recall wearing LS's in a season. I keep in touch with many officials down south. I was told two weeks ago from a crew out of Houston the temperature at the end of the game was to be 62 degrees so they felt it was best to go long-sleeve. I'd be in shorts at 62 degrees if you'd let me.
The wind drives most decisions but the forecast for tomorrow night at 7PM is 47 degrees. If the wind isn't blowing we very well will be in short-sleeves.

I had a baseball game in the second week of May a few years ago. It was a perfect day for baseball. We were around 85 throughout the day. The weather experts said a cold front would be moving in so me not being a weather expert my thought was at that time of the year a cold front would mean we'd be 75 degrees. We started the game off and and one team was really good and the other not so. It was 25 to 0 in the first inning. Then the wind began to pick up and it began to cool off rapidly. I was on the plate and I was the only one who carried my thin jacket in the car so I ended up giving that to my partner. The wind got colder and a cloud system moved in and it began to ice. It dipped down to 25 and we froze. The coaches both told me that every pitch was a strike no matter where it was thrown. Good by me. First batter gets up and he takes a swing at it and fouls it off. I look at him and ask if he's cold and he confirmed he was. I asked if he wanted to go home and again he confirmed. I then informed him that if he just stands there and quits swinging we might get out of here quicker. Finally the batters took the hint and we made it to the 3rd inning and the losing coach decided it was too much and he decided the game was over at that point. The lesson we learned is to always pack your winter gear no matter what month it is. 2 weeks later we were literally swimming in the pool.

The thing is, if its cold and raining and you don't have one of those weather beater type shirts, all the long sleeve shirt is going to do is get wet and keep you colder. Pending, of course, what you have underneath (and that may be enough). My only long sleeve shirt is the thin fabric as I prefer to use an undershirt to keep warm. I may get the weather shirt next year.

The Honigs Weather Beater shirt was the best $50 I have spent ever in officiating gear. I only have to use it once or twice per year, but it make potential horrible situations more tolerable.

Is it lined for cold weather or just made to keep off rain? I prefer a shirt that lets me wear something under the shirt to keep warm as it rarely gets cold enough down here to need quilting or whatever in the shirt.

I have never worn one but I have seen guys wear them and they burn up with just the shirt. No need to layer underneath it.

Around here 50 is freezing. Did a game in Prescott this year and the temperature was hovering right around 45 to 50, it was cold. My hands were ice by the end of the game.
However as this is Arizona, none of our crew has anything long sleeved. I don't think anyone even produces a long-sleeved shirt with AIA logo and position placard on the back.
I still have all my cold gear from when I was in Ohio and I have been told (but not officially) that we can wear long sleeved black shirts under our short-sleeved shirt, but personally I think that would look really bad.
