Curious...TASO mechanic for 7-man crew for HL/SJ and LJ/FG to switch at half, or is optional ?

Not optional. H and S start on pressbox side, L and F start on side opposite pressbox. L manages the chain crew in first half. Otherwise, keys and and responsibilities remain the same. Switch sides after halftime, and H manages chain crew.

TASO switches sidelines at halftime, just like the big boys on Saturdays do. If you're on a sideline, you work opposite your normal position in the 1st half, then go to your normal.sideline for the second half (ex. H starts pressbox side, then moves to his traditional position opposite the pressbox).

I didn't think it would work well for my crew but we've become accustomed to it. They biggest challenge was my L remembering how to be a H. But then again, he sometimes forgets how to be a L.

This is one of those things that doesn't hurt to do and isn't a bad thing, but I don't see a major benefit to it. It's more of a PR move for the coaches to think the guy on the other side isn't screwing them the entire game. Now they think both guys are screwing them when they are on the other side.

This was started in the NFL by and for the officials, not the coaches, so the guys on one sideline wouldn't have to listen to the same whining for the entire game from some particularly belligerent individuals. With several FBS coordinators being active or recently retired NFL guys, that caught on at FBS, albeit somewhat differently, since the chains actually move with the H - excuse me, the DJ - in the NFL.

I have had coaches upset over a call the opposite side official made. "I want that SON OF A GUN on my sideline". Sure thing coach, he'll be over here after halftime.

To quote a Coach from the Houston area who retired a few years ago: "Hell, I'm not worried about him (pointing to the official on his sideline), I'm worried about that guy over there!"

I find it delightful this mechanic is working out this year. I have yet to hear any official complain. That doesn't mean there are no complaints, just haven't heard them. This mechanic change had been requested for the last 5-6 years to TASO but never adopted because, at that time, many said officials would't like it. Happy to see most are enjoying the change.

Will be interesting to see if they move it down to the 5-man crews next year. In a lot of state we don't have enough officials to cover games with 7. we could handle a few each week, but it would be hard for us have quality 7-man crews from the top on down.

It is not practical for 5-official crews because the H and L don’t always line exactly opposite of each other, such as on kickoffs and field goals. You would have to significantly change their mechanics, unlike 7-official mechanics where the only change is who controls the chains.

That makes sense. I did not think of it from that angle. Hopefully we will be able to move to more 7-man in this area...recruit, recruit, recruit!

So true. In the second half of our game last Friday, the home coach caught during a timeout and complained “I know it’s not your fault, but every time we run to the other side of the field that guy calls a hold. Been happening all night long. “ this was in the 4th quarter and we swapped wings at the half.

I didn't think I would like the mechanic but I was quite wrong. It's been a good change IMO.

I now work in AZ and we work 5 man crews and the wings switch sides at half. KO and punt mechanics are really the only thing that changes. I think the focus on different mechanics each half on those plays helps keep me sharp. JMO
