Title: PSK, CLEAN HANDS, MULTIPLE FOULS
Post by: ElvisLives on November 27, 2019, 07:13:21 AM
This scenario happened last week:

4/10, A-40, 5:00 (3), A=38, B=21.
A11 legally punts.  While the ball is in flight, A88 shoves B90 in the facemask continuously, until B90 grabs A88 with both hands, twists A88, and pulls him to the ground at the B-35. B80 catches the kick at B-20, and advances to the B-30, where he is tackled, and the ball is declared dead.  During B-80’s run, B-70 blocked A-55 in the back at the B-25.

-B can elect offsetting fouls and repeat the down at the previous spot.
Or,
-B90’s holding foul is PSK.  By rule, B can decline the penalty for A88’s hands-to-the-face foul, to retain possession of the ball (effectively, the “clean hands” provision).
-A can then choose between the penalty for B90’s holding foul or B70’s block-in-the-back foul.  They will obviously elect the penalty for the IBB foul, at the B-25.
B, 1/10, B-15, Snap (25).

I must be reading this wrong.

Why would they not take PSK enforcement at the end of the kick (B20)?  1st and 10 from the 10.

It is early and I have a cold.  What did I miss?

Agreed, if B elects to keep the ball and decline offsetting fouls, A would then accept the PSK enforcement of B's holding foul at the PSK spot (the end of the kick - the B-20) and it would result in 1st and 10 from the B-10 and a 25 second play clock after the RFP.  I would think that B would accept offsetting fouls given the play here?  We need to be careful and make sure that we give B the correct options so they can make the right decision.

No, you aren't reading wrong.  I just messed up on writing the scenario.  In reality, this play happened, but not exactly this way.  The end of the kick, in reality, was way farther upfield, making the IBB the better choice.  So, I had that in my mind, and I was just trying to make the yard lines easier to comprehend.  That didn't exactly work out for me.
And, in reality, the HTF happened, but wasn't called.  It was noticed on video, so the "what if" scenario was developed. WHAT IF it had been called?  That's where this play came from.
If it gets us to thinking, it served its purpose.

But, here is a corrected scenario:
4/10, A-40, 5:00 (3), A=38, B=21.
A11 legally punts.  While the ball is in flight, A88 shoves B90 in the facemask continuously, until B90 grabs A88 with both hands, twists A88, and pulls him to the ground at the B-35. B80 catches the kick at B-25, and advances to the B-30, where he is tackled, and the ball is declared dead.  During B-80’s run, B-70 blocked A-55 in the back at the B-20.

-A can then choose between the penalty for B90’s holding foul or B70’s block-in-the-back foul (which would be penalized from the end of the kick, to the B-15).  They will obviously elect the penalty for the IBB foul, which would be penalized from the spot of the foul (the B-20), to the B-10.
B, 1/10, B-10, Snap (25).

There.  That's better.
