Team A player gets hurt at the team B 17, just short of the sideline. Clock stops for the injury. It appears to be cramps and the player scoots himself off the field, still in line with the B 17 but about 3 yards off the field. Do you wait until they get him back inside the team area or do you continue the game with the trainer working on him at the B 17 but OOB? Seems to me it would be a safety issue to continue.

If he’s more than six feet away from the sideline and he’s on his sideline, get the game going. What is the difference between a player being six feet off the sideline at the B-17 and being six feet off the sideline at the B-25?

I'll offer a slightly differing opinion (and this is more opinion than directed practice). If the player is laying on the ground, and somewhat immobile, I'm not gonna restart the game until they can get him back in the team area (at least 12' off the sideline, between the 25's. The player and the trainers are at definite risk if action should come their way, and he can't get himself out of the way quickly. I will ask if he can be moved back into the team area. If so, and they do, then we get moving. If not, we wait until they can get him moved. Unless he is in the true team area, I will encourage them to get him moved to the team area, or completely off the field (like, back to the dressing room). If he has a hangnail, and can move himself out of the way, okay, 6' off the sideline is enough.

Absolutely, if it’s a major injury that they’re going to be evaluating, we need to wait. But if it’s a cramp or something that he just needs to stretch out or walk off, I think you’re ok playing.
