NFHS rules, when the game goes into overtime, do the teams each get one additional timeout added to the number of timeouts they had remaining in regulation. IE--team A had zero timeouts thus now have 1 and team B had 2 timeouts thus they now have 3 or would each team just get one timeout each per overtime period.

No. Overtimes do not carry over. Each team gets one, and that is it. If you didn't use your TOs in regulation, you lose them.

They used to be accumulative BUT along came a game somewhere that went into 4 OTs. With a kicker lining up for a potential game-winning FG, the opposing coach - who had 6 TOs left- used them all in an unsportsmanlike attempt to disrupt the kicker. It DIDN'T work ,as the kick split the pipes, It DID work in getting the rule changed.

I began to think that was the case, Ralph. Keeping up with them was a pain.
I really wish the Fed would keep some sort of online file of annual rule changes for research purposes. I think refs.org did but they've set up two different era's and I don't think they do it anymore.

I'd want to see that archive as well because I'm having a hard time figuring out when that would have been.
It was obviously well before my time (granted, I'm a youngin', by comparison...), but to get a 4th OT you'd need somebody playing the Kansas Plan, which only came about in....
... 1970??

The NFHS Football Handbook has such. Chronology starting in 1860! If, like me, you love high school football it is a good read.

NC quit getting us the handbook a few years back. :'(

NC adopted NFHS OT in 1976. In 1974 (I was 11) my high school lost to our cross county rival in the 2nd round of the playoffs by 19 yards as they used total yardage to determine a winner to advance. I have seen reference to "penetration" being used as far back as the late 50's or early 60's.
