If a kicked ball touches the pylon I understand it to be a touchback....4-3-2 states that "If a loose ball touches a pylon, it is Out of bounds behind the goal line...Here is my question:
1. kicked ball is hits inbounds near the sideline at the 2 yd line and takes a bounce where it touches the outside edge of the front of the pylon after crossing the sideline at the 1 yd line (ball has not hit the ground after hitting the ground at the 2 and before the pylon)
2. since the pylon is considered OB, and the ball did not cross the goal line plane inbounds, is it still a touchback
3. logic would state that the ball would have to be OB before it hit the pylon and should therefore be marked where it crossed the sideline
Do logic and the rule contradict each other???

3. Per 2-29-3: "A loose ball is out of bounds when it touches anything, including a player or game official that is out of bounds."
In your OP, even if the kick (loose ball) is over the sideline, it is not oob until it touches anything that is oob.

Yes, technically if you think about it, the ball hitting the very outside of the pylon would be OOB without crossing the goal line. However, we are not that good, and that's why the rule says the pylon is in the end zone. So if the ball hits it anywhere, it's out of bounds behind the goal line.

By definition, the entire (properly placed) pylon is both OOB and behind the GL. In order for the ball to hit the pylon, it must have broken the GL plane.

Tuesday trivia pylon questions :
(1) A1 fumbles @ A's 1, bouncing ball strikes B1's backside @ A's 2 while he's gawking at opposing cheerleader and rebounds into pylon.
(2) K1 punts from his own end zone, R1 has airborne kick go thru his hands at A's 15 and it bounces back and bumps pylon.

1 - Safety. The touching by B was not a muff, therefore there is no new force applied to the ball. A's fumble put the ball into the endzone.
2. Safety. R's muff was not on a grounded kick, so therefore there is no new force. We have a kick dead in the endzone of the team in possession and their force put the ball there.

Agree. It takes a LOT for me to rule a new force also.

Agree. It must be crystal clear. I’m not in favor of bailing a team out for making a big mistake.
