Title: Rutgers Overturned Touchdown
Post by: Derek Teigen on November 01, 2020, 11:39:01 AM
Another absolutely amazing multiple lateral play ( I saw one by an Alabama HIgh School early in the year) by Rutgers to score a touchdown that was later overturned for an illegal forward pass.  I've watched the replay and I can't see it and its too bad that this crew had to interject themselves into what was an incredible play.

Just an overall comment on the college football season so far.  Is it just me and the games I saw but I'm seeing some ugly games, poor fundamentals, poor coaching.  It's like I'm watching high school football games. The virus has had a big impact on the game.

There’s that word again. What the h is a ‘l-a-t-e-r-a-l.’ Inquiring minds want to know.

(Edited to, hopefully restore the intended word, so that this thread makes some sense.)

I had to look up to see if there was something about using lateral and I read the official term should be 'backward' pass.  Is this what you are referring to?  I still think lateral pass is a good term because that would describe a pass that is literally 'lateral' or behind the passer.  But I'll use backwards pass from now if that's what we should use.

..."this crew"..."interject"

Ball released at 35.5, first touched at 36.5, therefore forward.

Hard to see on the field, that is why there is replay for such illegal actions.

I still don't see it.  Too close to call, call on field was legal 'backward' pass and no whistle so does replay show beyond a reasonable doubt?  Its too bad the play didn't count but its still a beautiful play.

Replay has to have indisputable video evidence to change a call on the field. They changed the call on the field, therefore, they had indisputable video evidence.

I think lateral used be used informally, or when discussing with others who don't know/realize that it's not a term defined in the rulebook.  Its use is pervasive, will never go away, and all we will do is confuse people who can't compute that when we would say backward pass, we mean (in their vernacular) lateral.  (Whether or not someone could tell you the difference between a lateral and a backwards pass, would be interesting to see what those not versed in the rule book would say.)

IMO here, and other 'formal' usages (such as on the field) we should use the correct terminology from the rule book.

Maybe one day one of us admins will add an auto-translation from "lateral" to "backward pass" :) (if somebody then talks about "forward laterals" it will result in "forward backward pass", which IMO is just as good...)

Note that this thread just became a bit more confusing as there now is an auto-translation from "laterl" (correctly spelled) to "backward pass" :)

Since when are fanboys allowed on this forum?

We've always let fans on here.  They have just been few and far between.  Sometimes they bring really good questions that we can help answer.
