Testing: In the NCAA thread Administrator Kalle embedded an auto correct to change any mention of 'backward' pass to 'backward' pass. Testing to see if this has carried over to the National Federation boards. But long story short I was reprimanded for using the term 'backward' pass and now understand that 'backward' pass is the correct term. The use of the word 'backward' pass has been banned from this sight! pi1eOn
Some musings:
A forward pass that is dropped is incomplete but a backwards pass that is dropped is a fumble. So is a backwards 'pass' really a 'pass'?????
If we can't use backward pass how best to describe a pass that is neither forward nor backward?

I will never use the word 'backward' in combination with pass. I will only use the accepted word of 'backward' in combination with pass. The words 'backward pass' has been erased from my memory banks. This is making me crazy hEaDbAnG but its kind of fun you should try it.

I changed the filter so that now the word l-a-t-e-r-a-l gets changed as lateral. This makes it a bit less confusing :)
(And yes, I really wish people on this board would stop using the L-word)

By rule (2-31-1), a pass is a ball traveling in flight. So, direction is unimportant. Therefore, the answer is yes, a backward pass is really a pass.
If we can't use backward pass how best to describe a pass that is neither forward nor backward?
By rule (3-31-5), if it ain't forward, it's backward.

Derek, to be clear a loose backward pass is not a fumble although it is treated like one. It is still an incomplete backward pass.

Outside of rule 2 having different definitions for each, is there a reason that distinction is made? (i.e, in what situation does the differing language matter?)

Fourth down in NCAA, unknown about Fed. Only the one fumbling may advance. On a backward pass, any one can advance.
Also the snap is a backward pas which may be muffed but not fumbled until possession is gained.

May not apply to Fed - I don't know - but, for NCAA, a backward pass that goes OB is OB at the spot where it crossed the sideline, period, and the game clock would not start until snap during the last 2 minutes of the 2nd or 4th periods. On the other hand, a fumble that goes OB in advance of the spot of the fumble is returned to the spot of the fumble, and the game clock is restarted on the RFP signal, regardless of time remaining in any period.

Will we EVER allow this poor dead horse, to RIP? In the NFHS world, the definition of a "backward pass" (NFHS 2-31-5) clearly explains that it considers two distinctly different circumstances as examples of a "backward pass", when it describes, " a pass thrown with it's initial direction parallel with OR toward the runner's endline".
That judgment determination rests EXCLUSIVELY with the game field officials.
