Title: Illegal Kick
Post by: JasonTX on August 23, 2024, 05:42:26 PM
Team A is losing in the 4th Period, 62-0 with 8 minutes left.  It's 3rd and 30 at the A-20.  A10 receives the snap and runs to his right and decides to punt the ball "rugby style".  The issue is, he is at the A-25 when he punts the ball.  Team B, not wanting to rub salt into the wound, decides they want to decline the penalty.  Ruling?

I posted this to illustrate the difference between an illegal kick and an illegal pass.  If this play would have been an illegal pass that would have been accepted, we penalize from the spot of the pass and if declined then the ball would belong to the passing team at the spot of the pass and that's very clear in the rules.  For the illegal kick, we would penalize from the previous spot.

Nobody wanted to bite and suggest if it's declined, we go back to the previous spot?  Ya'll are too easy.

I don't know why the two are different when the penalty is accepted.  Normally we give them everything they earned legally, but the rules are clear that the illegal kick is a previous spot enforcement.
