Been out of Internet range for a number of days. Try this:
Extra period number 3, from the B-3. B20 commits a pass interference foul on eligible A88 in B’s end zone (called by the F), and the ball falls incomplete.
Ruling:
(This question is intentionally leading, with this situation having happened on national TV recently.)
-
Unless I'm missing the intentionally leading part, this should be 1/G for A at the 2.
When the ball is snapped on or inside the Team B 17-yard line and outside the Team B two-yard line, and the spot of the foul is on or inside the two-yard line, the penalty from the previous spot shall place the ball at the two-yard line, first down (A.R. 7-3-8-XIV).

What type of down is being played?

Ahhh. All plays are considered tries in the 3rd OT, it's not a regular down. So should be 1/G from the 1.5 (half the distance) ) according to 10-2-5-b.

Bingo. A game that went 5 extra periods a few days ago had a DPI in the end zone during the 3rd extra period, and they put the ball at the B-2. Only 1/2 yard difference, but that half yard can make a difference in the down.

If you’re referring to the Hawaii bowl, I’m pretty sure that DPI was on a down snapped from the B-13 after an offensive hold on the previous down. In that case, the B-2 is the proper enforcement.

Well, I can’t express the shame and embarrassment on my face. Those are, of course, the facts. I was so focused on the fact that they were in the third extra period, that I ignored the true down/distance. No excuse. I will endeavor to be certain I have the true facts in the future.

Elvis, for what it's worth, circumstances incorrect or not, I appreciate the mental exercise in arriving at a answer and then validating that in the rule book (even though I should have read the scenario more closely.

I never understood why they made this exception. Regular play, you put it on the 2. On a try, you put it at the 1.5 if you're at the 3 yard line. Why make it inconsistent?

Sorry, at least this admin disagrees with you :) Even if this play situation does not reference an actual play situation it still is a good reminder that the single-down possession "series" are tries, as this also applies to fumbles by team A.
