Title: Signal 32 - Illegal Fair Catch
Post by: Whodatboy18 on August 06, 2025, 09:12:40 AM
I noticed in the list of official football signals, there is one for ran illegal fair catch, Signal 32. However, I don't find that wording anywhere in the rulebook or that signal referenced in Appendix G, the Summary of Penalties.

Is this just a relic of a bygone era? Curious as to why it wasn't removed or if I'm missing something.

It would appear. We had a foul for an illegal signal a long time ago, but that just became an invalid signal (no foul). The signal should either be re-named “Invalid fair catch signal,” and used when we have an invalid signal (virtually every signal we see these days), or just omitted.
