Title: Scrimmage Kicker protection zone, under College rules
Post by: John B on October 13, 2025, 06:22:22 PM
When did rule 9.16.4. Change to reduce the kicker protection zone from inside tackle box to Endline to inside tackle box to 5 yds behind where kicker’s original position at snap?
I understand between 2013 and 2024

Way more recent. 2023.

And this was the play in 2022 (correctly officiated at the time) that spurred the change.

Thank you all. I knew it existed in 2013, because i found it in one of my old rule books and it is obviously 5 yds limit now. I have been trying to coach some new officials, who only recall what they had for breakfast this morning.
One thing we miss here is, the “corporate experience” of a long culture of playing and officiating football. If it’s not in games at the moment, they don’t appreciate how rules evolve and where from!
I really appreciate the responses from this site!
