Title: NFL Drop kick on kickoff
Post by: ElvisLives on October 04, 2026, 07:21:20 PM
I’m guessing the NFL has the same rule for using a drop kick on a kickoff, i.e., the ball has to be kicked from ON team A’s restraining line. When it became apparent that Las Vegas (vs Kansas City, today) was going to give a drop kick a try for an onside kick, the R conferred with a few others on the crew, then had a conversation with the Las Vegas kicker. When he kicked the ball he dropped it extremely close to his restraining line (it looked like some part of the ball may have actually be OVER the RL), then kicked the ball. KC recovered, but it was interesting to see this happen in the NFL only two weeks after a drop kick was used on a kickoff in the NCAA (which we now know was executed illegally).
Would like to have heard those conversations.

I bet you can find out from the source what those conversations were like.   ;D

ONLY speaking from NFHS,but I believe a simular interpretation would be in all codes. NFHS 6-1-2 sez' : "When a punt is used after a safety, the ball must be kicked WITHIN one step of K's free-kick line." While the extremely rare use of a drop kick ,it can be used on a free kick (2-24-6). Unlike a place kick, which is stationary, a drop kick is made by a moving player,IMHO, and would fall under the same restrictions as a punt after a safety. The rationale of the ',,within one step' rule is to prevent the kicker going several yards behind K's NZ and kicking a grounder. K's teammates could enter the NZ with the kick and possibly beat the ball to R's NZ. :o
