I am the B on my crew. Two years ago we had a kicker kick a 46-yarder as the half expired. The crowd went wild and it cleared the cross bar by about three feet. That was an exciting call! I tried not to emulate the FJ jumping when calling Dempsy's 63-yarder! :)
What's the longest FG you've called as an official?
-
~ 45 yards actually.

You mean this one?

That's the one! My feet were firmly planted on the ground, although I may have thrown my arms in the air more emphatically!

Hernando High School playing Lafayette Co. HS (Mississippi) about five years ago. I was a last minute addition to the crew, and working BJ. End of first half, Hernando, with no warning, suddenly runs the FG team onto the field to try a 57 yard kick. We were so shocked that the LJ didn't even come back with me; I was all alone under the crossbar.
Kick never veered right or left -- straight down the middle all the way. So as it reached about the 20, I'm telling myself "it won't get here, won't get here". About that time, I realized that I was looking up at the crossbar, and that the ball had just crossed the crossbar about 4 feet above it. I was so stunned I didn't signal anything for a second. I remember thinking briefly, "damn, it DID get here". Then I stepped out and signaled good -- crowd went wild. 57 yard FG to end the half. Pretty amazing.
-
56 yards. Just short of the record. Back Judge and I were under the goal post. I'm talking all the way. "Ain't no way any kid can kick it this far." "See it's going to be short !" "Whoa, this just might get here !" "Watch close ...... good night ! Who is that kid ?"
The kick cleared the bar by 5 yards easily. I'm still convinced they should have taken a delay of game penalty to get the record. Oh yeah .....right down the middle.
-
I think it was 44 yds ^good
-
Longest I've seen while working 45yds.
-
45 yards, two weeks ago.
-
31 years ago, I kicked a 45 yarder after missing 3 PATs.
-
I had one for 43 yards a couple weeks ago. It would have been good from at least 55.

Maybe Atl Blue can give you some pointers. ;D
-
Had a 51 yard attempt in a 6 man Texas H.S. game a few Saturdays ago.
He missed it wide left. (had the distance) It was a home schooled kid playing for a home school team.
-
54 yards. Had a kid try a 65 yarder this season to try to win the game with time expiring but he mis-kicked it and it landed in the end zone short 5 yards. His kick-offs were going that far so the coach figured....
-
Two weeks ago - 50 yarder - good from at least 55, possibly a little more.
-
Private school in Ft Worth 3 years ago 51 yarder. The kids last home game he went on to play soccer, he actually was a very good soccer player. During the game he also hit the uprights on a KO. He tried all night to clear the uprights on KO's. :bOW
-
I had Trilica (the old kicker from Texas Tech) hit a 49 yarder to end the game as a 9th grader. Needless to say the next week he was playing on Varsity.
-
We had two 51 yarders in the first half of a game this year. Both straight down the middle and one would have been good from 65. Same kid puts every kickoff way past endline. Only a sophomore.

Dang! What's his name?
-
Can't remember. He plays for South Lake HS in Groveland, just west of Orlando.
-
62, in a playoff game. The wind was behind the kicker and I think he could have gotten 5 to 7 yards more. All players (and crew) just stood and looked after he put the foot into it. He duplicated it the next year in the regular season, and it's still a state record. The young man went on to kick in a major college and in the pros.

Probably this guy:

52-yarder. Dead center. Guys under the goal said it would have been good from another 5 yards.
-
It wasn't good, but I saw a 62-yard FG attempt after a fair catch in the HS playoff game that I worked on the chain crew. It was a miserable, muddy night with about 15 seconds left in the first half. Fell about 10 yards short and ended in the EZ for a touchback. First time I'd ever seen it, but our crew was all over it (and had discuessed it during the pregame).
I can't tell you how many times the four of us on the chain crew got asked what that was during halftime while we were on our way to the restroom, either.
-
We had a Nederland, Texas kid kick one through this last year from 48, and it was at least half-way or higher on the uprights above the crossbar, figure it could have gone from at least 55.
-
I was not working the game as an official but instead as a scout for a D-I college program. I was there to look at a linebacker but saw Jason Elam kick a 57 yarder for Brookwood HS, near Atlanta. We offered him but he opted for Hawaii instead, real smart kid! I believe he went on to tie Dempsey's NFL record, Is that correct AB?
-
3 seconds left in the game as Jersey Village (Houston area), was about to attempt a FG from the opponent's 45 yard line to win the game. The left tackle false started causing the kick to be from the 50. Unbelievably, the kicker nailed it with room to spare ending the game. Pretty amazing.
-
9th Grade Game, Westminster vs. Marist (Georgia). Kid booted a 49 yard FG with 3 seconds to go to win the game.
-
1st year of doing varsity ball, Kid hit the state record 59 yarder. Funny thing is afterward he shanked 2 extra points,
-
Not a FG, but this past saturday I saw a kid on a kickoff in a 6-man game(kickoff from the A-30 and the field is 80-yd) kicked it about 10 yards out of the EZ.
-
This last week in an 8th grade game 2nd qtr running out an A on B's 23 I hear coach call for fg team. I thought no way I heard that right, on comes the tee kid drills a 40 yd fg with room to spare. The other teams coach says, I don't think our varsity kicker has that strong of a leg. It was impressive for an 8th grader.

62 yd attempt unsuccessful but pretty close for that distance.

56 yards, but short and returned 108 yards for a TD. Oh wait, that was Bama and Auburn .....Got a second? LOL!
-
When I was a sophomore in high school, we played a team with a kicker who split the uprights on every kickoff. Each time, it looked like he would have made it from another 15 yards back.
-
64 yards.

I was LJ and had a great view after snap tackle key...

Unsure about the longest, but I recall vividly the "scariest" .
SCENE : State championship game - early 1980's
I was the back judge on a 5 man crew, a sunny November day, Stearns led Winthrop by 2 with 0:05 to go.
(1) Winthrop was preparing to try a 37 yard field goal;
(2) field goals in Maine were rare back then (musta' been the gravitional pull :P);
(3) the LJ & I headed to our positions under the pipes;
(4) I asked : "Have you ever done this before?"
(5) He said : "NOPE, hope kick goes your way :o ."
(6)The sun was in ours eyes, we were both :o :o;
(7)my silent prayer: "Please send the kick his way pray:; ."
(8)The kick barely made it to the endzone ;D ;D.
(9) The Stearns players, coaches & fans celebrated aWaRd aWaRd aWaRd.
(10) I wiped sweat from my brow ::) - it was a cold day.
Morale of story : If you should be called upon to call a kick, it doesn't hurt to go under the pipes in pre-game as the kickers practice. IMHO, it give you the same feeling of confidence a plate ump gets from watching warm up pitches prior to the start of a game.

Instead of being the guy that hopes the play goes the other way, be the guy that WANTS the play to come his way. Running play, passing play, or kicking play - be the guy that wants to make the critical call.

One that involves the ball going over the pylon in a critical situation and you have to decide was it in the end zone or out of bounds. :thumbup

Agree 100%, Robert, I normally like challenges. During our regular season back then I was always the R or U and this expected call was to be totally out of my element. Studying the BJ duties, I should have considered the possibility and prepared. I didn't...I lucked out...BUT I'll be ready now -along with Mr. umpire - to call a free kick from a fair catch!!!
