On a Try, Team A is lined up in a "swinging gate" formation. Being that it's not obvious a kick may be attempted we should not be allowing any numbering exceptions nor should the snapper be afforded extra protection if they snap from this formation. Am I correct?

If they have player with his knee on the ground ready to receive the snap and another player behind him ready to kick the ball. I would guess this would still be a kicking formation.

It is a kicking formation, yes, but it is not obvious that a kick will be made, so no numbering exceptions and no extra protection to the snapper, IMO, if they snap from it.

Doesn't it say "obvious a kick MAY be made" not, "obvious a kick WILL be made" ? Not trying to be Clintonesque here but the 2 words are pretty different.

(For this question, we should assume it is not obvious a kick MAY be made until the kicker lines up in position to kick a placed ball) - If the play is a try and there is only a quarterback behind the snapper (who has his hands on the ball), is it legal for #80 (who was an ineligible receiver by position when the snapper established) to shift to an eligible position and remain in an eligible position until the ball is snapped.

Yes, but I agree with Kalle that, from this formation, it is not obvious a kick many be attempted. We're looking for a standard, normal, field goal attempt formation.

If #80 is on the end of the line, can he be both the snapper and an eligible receiver?

Players must be eligible by both number and position. His position is an end so he is eligible . Being the snapper does not change his status as an end.

You have a snapper, you have a holder with his knee on the ground, and you have a kicker about 3 yards behind the holder.
And you don't think it's obvious that a kick MAY be made? You have all of the necessary ingredients!
