I was watching the game and noticed the R would always line up on the wide side of the field instead of the throwing arm side of the QB. Is this normal in TX?

Not with 5 man mechanics. He should be on the QB throwing arm side unless scrimmage kick then he will go to L side to assist.

Probably a good idea to be on the QB throwing arm side but it is NOT required.
R. Be in a position 12 to 14 yards deep and outside the shoulder of tight end or where he
would usually line up on the line of scrimmage, where you may comfortably see the ball and
backs except flankers, or a man in motion toward you. Usual position on long or open side
of field behind the deepest back or backs, in position to see the snap. May work on the
throwing arm side of the quarterback if desired.

Agreed. Though the mechanic leaves this as an option, I can't think of an advantage/reason for being on the opposite arm.

Some guys need the option because they just can not cover the field. I know you can open up why WH etc etc but it is still an option. Not my prefered option either.

I prefer to "balance the field" unless it's an obvious passing situation (5-man). Most HS teams still run more than pass, and most run to the wide side.
Now if I know a team is pass-happy, or the coach tells me before the game that they're going to pass most of the time, I'll adjust accordingly.
In 6 or 7 man crews, I'm on the passing arm side always.
