Title: Fri night game, Cal vs Nevada
Post by: golfingref on September 18, 2010, 09:47:59 PM
Receiver fumbles ball forward at 1 1/2 yd line, "recovers" ball as it is resting on the goal line by placing his right hand on top of the ball.  Originally ruled down at about the 1 yd line.  Replay rules touchdown.  This play occurred in the late 3rd or early 4th quarter in case Mike can find a replay.  Just wanted an explanation on how a hand on the ball can give possession as other defenders are falling on it.

I don't think a hand on the ball as it lay on the ground is enough to establish possession.  This isn't Rugby.

I thought it was arguable from the video that firm possession was established over the goalline just as he brought the ball back to his body.
