It's not in the job description of Musberger, Herbstreit, et al. to be rules experts. So it's pretty much just funny when they make incorrect pronouncements on the rules.

But here's what I don't get: if you were a producer for ABC or ESPN, would it be THAT hard to have someone--ANYONE--in the booth or the truck who kinda knows the rules?  Granted, they're not gonna go hire someone just to give rules interpretations.

But they've got talking heads who are calling the game and commenting each week on the rules.
Wouldn't it make the televised product better if they at least had someone in their ear who could clarify/explain something like that?

I'm not saying that at the drop of the hat they should be able to speak intelligently about a 1-pt safety or the blocking zone disintegrating. But faceguarding?  As Gob Bluth would say...

While I agree with the missed call by the announcers on this one, I will tell you that when Mr. Musberger was in Boise a couple weeks ago, he came into the replay booth before the game, with his rule book, and asked us a question from a game earlier in the year.  He also came in at halftime and talked with the replay official about a rule decision from that game.  He gave me the impression that he does care about the rules, sometimes that just doesn't play out when he speaks.

I have worked with him on a number of broadcasts.  He was a minor league (VERY minor league) baseball umpire at one time.

And he butchers baseball rules on the air as well.

He's not as bad as Tim McCarver is on baseball broadcasts. I cant imagine how McCarver was such a great catcher but knows absolutely NOTHING about the rules of the game. It's brutal

Well, we do have our "specialists" over here.
On Eurosport 2, the German commentators are still talking about 2-minute-warnings during their Saturday NCAA broadcasts.

After several years(!) of broadcasting NCAA games.

Despair not. I still hear references to a "five yard chuck zone" from time to time on NCAA broadcasts.

Heavy sigh.
