Looks like you got the final data in - great job.   The Dallas Smith/Lovejoy was a very late addition for Dallas.   Not sure why it took so long since they both use Dallas in regular season.   I don't know how hard it would be to pull this together, but the real interesting info would be how games are distributed that include teams outside of your normal area.   That way you could eliminate the Hou vs. Hou games (for example) and see how many games each chapter is getting where there are choices.

Post by: Coby on November 12, 2010, 10:43:15 AM
I am going to abbreviate the team names.  Just look on the sheet.  You do the stats I am just posting the info.

5AD1
DeSoto vs Bryan (We did some Bryan beacause of weird distance of the district)
5A-2
Leander vs Aus
Carroll vs oconnor
4A-1
Vic vs Jeff West
CC Rau vs Weslaco

4A-2
Cors vs Bastrop
Hutto vs mesquite
CC vs Mercedes
Ed Coch vs Alice

3A-1
0
3A-2
Texarkanna Gilmer
Gidd vs Brookshire (we do Brookshire)
BC vs Cold Spr (we do cold springs)
Columbus vs Rockdale (I think we do Columbus)

2A-1
Cotulla vs Santa
EB vs Skidmore

2A-2
0
1A-1
Hull Daisetta vs Normangee
The game of the night for the Houston Chapter.  They got the pick in early to make sure they could get the best crew in the chapter. aWaRd  Honestly though I have no idea why I was picked for this game.  I am excited and grateful for the opportunity.  this is only the 2nd time I have ever been picked.  So if anyone of you are near Magnolia and would like to come out by all means just come on by.

Good and interesting stuff, Coby.   The game that jumps out is Leander vs. Austin - wonder why Austin wouldn't have this.

Dallas out of area:

5A-I
Allen vs. NW - Allen is Dallas, but NW is Ft. W, but coach came from Garland NF.

5A-II
0

4A-I
Crosby vs. Nederland

4A-II
0

3A-I
Gatesville vs. Madisonville

3A-II
Bridgeport vs. West
Estacado vs. Dalhart
Argyle vs. Anna (Anna is Dallas, believe Argyle is FtW)
Prosper vs. Ranchview (Ranchview is Dallas, Prosper is FtW)
Crandall vs. Van (Crandall is Dallas, Van ?)
Ferris vs. Canton (Ferris is Dallas, Canton ?)
Lorena vs. Mexia

2A-I
Pottsboro vs. Eustace (Pottsboro is Dallas, Eustace ?)

2A-II
Linden-Kildare vs. Rivercrest

The 4A/5A district alignments really hurt Dallas as there are numerous cases where Dallas does one side of the district pairs and not the other.

Good luck on your game!!

"The game that jumps out is Leander vs. Austin - wonder why Austin wouldn't have this."

VERY frustrating that two schools that use the Austin chapter for sub varsity and varsity all year long don't use the Austin chapter for a playoff matchup.  VERY frustrating.

Does that happen often?  How would other chapters handle this, for lack of a better way to put it, "slap in the face?"
Title: Re: 2010 Playoff Brackets

God Bless Texas and their HS football coaches! ;-). Not much you can do.  Your chapter leadership might reach out (after the season) to see what they could have done differently to keep this from happening in future.

Maybe by the tine the teams contacted the chapter the "cream of the crop" was already taken so they went elsewhere?

I'm with you Fat.  Seems like Dallas has one or 2 of these every year (none in week 1 this year  :).  I think that some of the excuses is that don't like the same officials within the chapter - pretty lame.   I'm not sure that we have done anything about it in the past, but you would hope that when subvarsity and varsity schedules are being discussed for the next season there should be serious discussion at that point.

It has happened here. I am uncertain what you can do but it is a slap. It does not help when you ask and do not get a good responce you can use to help educate the ranks within on what to do better. I think sometimes coaches do not like same list of crews and then do not want to takle anyone they are not familiar with so they simply go outside teh home chapter.

We have seen this before.  Apparently the schools are afraid of either team having an advantage due to being liked more by the chapter.  On one occasion we had 2 schools that requested officials that haven't worked for either team more than once in the past couple of years.  That list got real short in a hurry.

"The game that jumps out is Leander vs. Austin - wonder why Austin wouldn't have this."

Just a guess on my part, but since the Austin High coach was ejected from a game, and it was a long time in coming from what i understand, he wants to "pay back" Austin by going elsewhere.  The UIL suspended him for the next week, from what I was told.  I do believe the Austin Chapter refused to supply a chain crew because a chain crew from the Central TX Chapter is going there.

Sometimes it is hard to believe we are all grownups.

You are correct Doc. Sour grapes from AHS and a season full of whine from LHS. Part of the problem with one coach was he complained that Austin had not complied with UIL registration.  hEaDbAnG  After they rejected our chapter from doing the game, they called back and asked for a support crew. When our secretary told him no, he hung up in a huff. Also, the story is not finished as there might be fallout next season. No one here is losing sleep and look forward to the games that will come our way. eAt&

How did the chapters do this week "outside of their normal area"?

Dallas didn't get any love for 5A.   Especially frustrating is none of the big 4 games at Jerry's world on Saturday.   Just a few years ago, all but Trinity were Dallas schools, so Dallas would have gotten 3 of the 4, now zip.

5A-I
none

5A-II
none

4A-I
Smithson Valley vs. Cedar Park (big game)

4A-II
Cedar Park Vista Ridge vs. SA Alamo Heights

3A-I
none

3A-II
Brownwood vs. Bridgeport

2A-I
none

2A-II
West Rusk vs. Rogers

1A-I
none

1A-II
Mount Enterprise vs. Baird
Chilton vs. Era

I'm personally sitting at home this week, waiting for that later round game.   Anniversary is tonight, so going to enjoy a big steak at Bob's and drink a little vino.

From the sheet, it looks like DAL got a 5A-II at Jerry world on Friday night.  Teams werent an area covered by DAL though.

Something i find, well, i guess interesting is the word.

Trinity v Allen, Duncanville v Coppell etc, neither used a DAL or FTW crew, and instead went out of the area.

What would cause that?  This is more of a curiosity then anything else.

Trinity & Duncanville use FTW and Coppell & Allen use Dallas. Pretty typical that they go elsewhere for Officials. I think the Coaches feel like the other guy might be getting an advantage if they use their regular season Chapter.  Both games used Houston. I was at the Trinity/Allen game and thought the crew did an outstanding job.

Friday night's game was both Dallas - Mesquire Horn vs. Rowlett

Doc hit the others on the head.  Rarely will one school use another school home official, so they go to a neutral chapter.   Don't you know that we all cheat?  (at least that is what the coaches think).

If two schools who use the same chapter for most of their home games, goes outside that local chapter for a 3rd round playoff game, how does that set with your members/board?
Title: Re: 2010 Playoff Brackets
Post by: TexDoc on November 23, 2010, 11:53:33 AM
Not well at all, and you don't have to wait any past the first round to see a few examples of that.  To me, that's grounds to drop that school's entire schedule for next season.  If a chapter supports your program from 7th through varsity, you better reciprocate by utilizing that chapter when possible in the playoffs.

Go back to Page 1 of this thread starting with posts on Nov 12.  This issue was hashed out somewhat there.

There may be "logocal" reasons (if any reason a coach uses to pick chapters/officials is "logical".) Example:  School inside the confines of San Antonio proper is playing a school that is 150 miles from San Antonio but which is serviced by the San Antonio Chapter.  The "outlier" may think he is not going to get a fair shake as the school he is playing is in the main city of the Chapter.   Would definitely be something to discuss with the coach(es) involved prior to the next season to see what it was that caused him to make that decision.  I have never been a supporter of "boycotts" so would not withhold the Chapter's services in the future, even if they did something like this.

Dallas is not getting any love, especially at 5A level.   This is typically a rough week for Dallas as there are rarely Dallas/Dallas games, but only 1 2A game outside of the area?   Ouch!  Wish I knew what's up.

I dont know if boycott is the right strategy, but I do believe that a chapter leader should have a conversation with them about it.  Maybe that already happens?  Who Knows?  But it's sort of a slap in the face to the members who have worked those schools all season to get snubbed at playoff time.  Maybe that is an evaluation of sorts, maybe they just couldn't agree on a crew, or maybe coaches are just the most paranoid people on the face of the planet.  But it aint right!

I know the feeling.  We have 2 teams who we cover in the same district that are meeting in our backyard.  They elected to use an outside chapter because they wanted to use a crew they didn't know.  The 2 teams are only 11 miles apart.  Perhaps it could be part of that "fair shake" that TXMike posted.

I know this works both ways...our chapter is certainly gets the benefit of this situation more than we get shafted by our own schools.  Just wondering how other chapters dealt with it.

That would be good.   Dallas does always seem to get games at a better rate in the last couple of rounds.   Hopefully, that is true this year.   I think I'm in the next couple of crews that would be assigned by chapter.   Just need to get the games to the chapter.

i am kind of stunned at the number of games that HOU got this week over every one else.

It seems a bit out of proportion, even though they are the largest.

If you look at the brackets it seems they have worked one or both of the teams that are in ea game they have this week.  That tells me those schools have seen the Chapter's representatives and were pleased with them so they are taking the Chapter again.  I would hope that any of us who have the chance to catch a game this weekend and happens to see them (or guys from any chapter for that matter) and who could provide constructive criticisim, would do so.  I suspect (hope) they would welcome it.  I know when we are at a game site and guys from the local area pop in to welcome us to the place I appreciate it when they are willing to offer an honest assessment as opposed to a general "you guys look great out there."

(Not that it had any bearing on things I am sure but it used to be that the Houston Chapter had the greatest percentage of guys holding the line against the UIL.  I hope they continue doing so when they are once again in those state champ games and the funky hats get distributed)

This statement could not be any further from the truth at this point.  Thanks Doc for putting the number of officials per chapter in your report.  Houston has 21% of the games so far but has 17.5 % of the TASO population.  Using these 2 constructs as a comparison Abilene, South Plains, and College Station all have higher percents of games then they do % of TASO populations.  On the other end of the spectrum Dallas with 13% of TASO has only received 8.5% of the games ie Dallas is getting screwed.  I have no idea the historical data to compare this too, but it should be interesting moving forward.  Yes I realize that there are about 5 crews in houston that have received more assignments then 10 of the chapters.  However, once again the Houston chapter has received 0 6-man games.  For as long as I have been reading this report this is the longest drought of a chapter not receiving any love from a specific Division 1A, 2A, 3A etc. in existence.  As I would also point out by reading the posts on here we all treat every game we work as the most important game regardless of size.  :-*

Certainly, it shouldn't be that difficult to get the info from all of the TAPPS, SPC, or any of the private and parochial school playoff games.   z^

I've never tracked TAPPS but certainly the information is there.  The task has been time consuming enough with what I'm putting together now.  My main focus has always been the public school playoffs.  I may attempt to pull together TAPPS info next year, time permitting.

TAPPS TCAL and SPC games will be even more scewed towards the bigger chapters.  In general private schools only exist in big cities.  The TAPPS schools usually have it where the higher seed gets a first round home game.  So therefore HOU, SAT, and Dallas get more games.  The SPC only has 1 championship game not a playoff.  Kincaid in Houston beat a team from Tulsa.  The game was played in Dallas I believe by a Dallas crew.  Here is what I would like to know about TAPPS.  Who gets the state championship games?  I know it is not Houston.  The games always seem to be predetermined to play in Temple.  Does Central Texas or Waco get the game??? Any help on that question would be appreciated.

Coach, I know Austin, College Station and Temple and probably Waco have called the TAPPS championships in past years.  I am assuming there is some sort of rotation with the chapters as to which one calls which games.  I do know the games are spread among the above mentioned chapters, and perhaps others.

Austin, Temple and Waco get a lot of these state championships because of where they are played.  I know Austin normally assigns D2 guys to these games, or they did in the past.

The Dallas Chapter has this years TAPPS Division IV State Championship game tomorrow in Killeen. It is the first time I can remember Dallas working one of those. If memory serves they used to play all of them at Floyd Casey Stadium (Baylor) in Waco during a single weekend. Then they were moved to Temple. Now it appears they will be played in Temple, Killeen and Moody (6 Man games)

There are only 23 TAPPS approved officials organizations and 5 of those are non-TASO affiliated so the odds have increased at getting those games due to some chapters not registering with TAPPS.

I realize it is beyond our control, but this week seems to be a much more equitable division of the games among the chapters.  11 different chapters working on the next to last weekend is pretty good!  Congrats to all who got "the call" and have a great game!

Depends on how you define "equitable".
Title: Re: 2010 Playoff Brackets

All right, Mike, I'll bite:  how the hell would YOU define equitable?
Title: Re: 2010 Playoff Brackets
Post by: TXMike on December 09, 2010, 06:03:01 AM
I know it is NOT a simple spreading of games around, 1 per Chapter.  The most "equitable" suggestion I have seen so far is based on Chapter size, i.e. if you have 20% of the football officials in the state, you should have 20% of the games.  A number that I suspect would be close to the same would be something like...the percentage of total games worked by a Chapter during the season (7th grade - HS) should equal the percentage of playoff games a Chapter gets.
Title: Re: 2010 Playoff Brackets
Post by: Headlinesman on December 09, 2010, 06:28:29 AM
Well, you are right in that such is certainly NOT my definition of equitable.  I know that you would agree with me that there are officials in most all of our chapters who are quality enough officials to work good 4A and 5A ball, but because those folks choose to earn their living in places like Abilene, Tyler, Waco, Temple, Midland, or Odessa, they do not get the numbers of opportunity during the regular season like guys from Houston, Dallas, Austin, Ft. Worth, and San Antonio.  Should these guys be rewarded or penalized come playoff time because of where they live?  Where's the equity in that?  Also, according to your formula, that would really tie the coaches' hands at picking the officials or chapters they might want.  I simply don't the coaches would sit well with being told, 'OK Coaches, you HAVE to agree on your officials coming from either the Houston or Ft. Worth chapters this week.  As long as we are going to preserve the mantra of coaches having full autonomy on agreeing on their officials, I just think the whole state should be at their disposal.  To do otherwise would be as pharisaical as what the UIL is trying to do.
Title: Re: 2010 Playoff Brackets
Post by: TXMike on December 09, 2010, 07:36:43 AM
If you want to discuss "equitable" , we need to eliminate the coaches from the equation.  As long as they are involved there will never be an "equitable" distribution.  If you say, that is the way it is, they have to be involved...then there is no point even saying what is or is not equitable because their involvement skews things dramtacially.

So, removing them from the equation and speaking in hypotheticals..
I believe there are at least 5 guys in every Chapter who are more than capable of working a state playoff game (or even the championship games).  But I also know that if we tell each Chapter, give us your top 25% of officials at each position, obviously each chapter's list will be a different size. Houston will give you a list of almost 200 guys while the Tyler Chapter will turn in 30. There is no way you can say it is "equitable" for each of those Chapters to have the same number of games.

Old Fart:  There are plenty of problems with being from Houston with regards to playoff games.  Number 1: most officials have to pay their dues for 6-8 years before they are on a varsity field.  You do not have that problem in other chapters.  Number 2: The Houston Chapter has not been assigned or picked for a 6man UIL playoff game for as long as I have seen the spreadsheet.  This is the single longest drought of a classification and a chapter that I have ever seen.  Are you equally upset about that fact that those games need to be spread around???  I am not that upset about it because if I were a 6man football coach I would want crews that call a lot of 6man football (i.e. abilene, south plains, etc.).  Just like if I was a 5A football coach and I had a big game I would want a crew with a lot of 5A football experience calling the game (i.e. houston, dallas, etc.).

There are absolutely members of every chapter capable of officiating games at the semi final and final level.  But like TXMIKE said it is a percentage issue.  The top 5 percent of Tyler is 10 guys, the top 5% of Houston is 45 guys.

TXMIKE:  The only way that I can see that solves the picking of officials issues is keeping the coaches in the loop.  If TASO had to pay evaluators to evaluate officials across the state it would be a huge financial issue.  The way in place now works because if the coaches complain you say, "coach you picked them, don't pick them next time".
Title: Re: 2010 Playoff Brackets

Please don't take my comments in the wrong context - I am not really upset about anything, but glad the smaller chapters are represented this week.  I have officiated in both small and large chapters - there are definite assets and liabilities to both, but, it simply being what it is, both are necessary to a peaceful co-existence.  Its sorta like our legislative process - when discussing bills that are going to dramatically affect the cities, it isn't just the metropolitan reps and senators that get to vote, and vice versa on suburban and rural issues. I wish there were plenty of playoff games to go around for all, as they are usually peak experiences for the officials, as well.  Again, best of luck to all who are working this weekend.
