Title: Somehow I am sure this was the ref's fault
Post by: TXMike on November 15, 2010, 07:58:57 PM
Incredible ending. (And precisly why they should not be blowing the clock horns just because time gets to 00 )
Game out of Florida, Oviedo vs Winter Springs.

There is no problem with the horn, just a problem with a terribly incompetent coach. "Run around. When the horn sounds, take a knee." What simpler instruction can you give a 16 or 17 year old?

Am I the only one who heard the announcer say "the kids a dumba$$!"?

I have a problem with the horn.  Q: What purpose does it serve in a football game?  A: Nada. Zip. Nothing.  Q: So why is it used in a football game?  A: Because the clock operator is ignorant on the proper operation of his/her console.  Q: If it doesn't mean anything, then what does it matter?  A: See the above video for a very good reason why it matters.

Absolutely right fadamoor.  I can't speak to all mechanics manuals but I know ours includes B telling the clock operator before the game to turn off those end of period horns.  Some do not have the capability to be turned off, others choose to ignore the direction, but they are supposed to be off.

Nice catch!      yEs:

But I'm not sure it's an announcer.  It may just be someone who was close enough to the camera's built-in mic to be picked up.

Regardless, he's correct!

When I'm assigned as ECO, the first thing I do in the press box is familiarize myself with the console.  Then I'll set the clock to 5 seconds and start it to check if the auto horn/siren is on.  If it is, then I start going through the console menu options until I disable the auto horn.  If it's a Daktronics console, I can usually get all that done and the clock ready for game time with 15 minutes or so to spare.  Some of the other consoles may take longer (and as mentioned some can't be turned off at all).

Hear hear Fadamore.

If the scoreboard is used exclusively for football, find the siren/buzzer/horn and cut the cables to it. Problem solved.

Not saying the ECO should do it of course, but it would solve the problem.

Do they use the horn for Soccer/Lacrosse/Field Hockey?  If so then it has to stay, unfortunately.

Nice cheap shot #66 takes as #6 is looking to join the celebration.

Yeah I saw that too.  I wondered if he got flagged off-camera for that as it certainly was away from the play and on an unsuspecting player.

Last play of the game, I doubt many officials are going to flag a deadball foul after the game is over. It would be declined by rule anyway as there is not place to enforce the penalty ( no try or k ickoff).

Also with that kind of emotion and celebration going on, get off the field as quickly as possible. Nothing good can come of the officials hanging around.
