Title: What a Mess in West Virginny
Post by: TXMike on December 01, 2010, 06:20:37 AM
Maybe someone from WV can clarify but they have a mess on their hands.  Has gone as far as court hearings with testimony from the crew and use of their game cards.   Appears there was a game a few weeks ago.  Near the end of teh game an on-field brawl erupted.  They were unable to resume the game and both coaches agreed to end it.  The crew did a game report and identified 4 players from one team as being ejected for fighting.  Under rules there, that meant they had to sit out the next game.  The school goes to court and gets an injunction so the players are permitted to play in the playoff game.  The team wins the game.  Now the team that lost the playoff game is in court saying they should be moved forward in the playoffs as the winners used players that should have not played due to the fighting suspension.

It really does not sound much different than what happens here in Texas on a fairly regular basis. It probably happens in most states. School will have an ineligible player, lawyers get involved, games are played, school eventually is dethroned as champion. (i.e. Dallas Carter, South Oak Cliff to name a few)

This one does smack a little more of hanging chads

They just postponed the AAA state championship game.  Some are blaming the game officials.  Go figure.

Another example where courts do not belong involved in school disciplinary matters.  School is supposed to be a learning experience and what may be technically legal isn't always guaranteed to be right.

AFTERNOON UPDATE — Supreme Court rules against South Charleston football
Anonymous Bluefield Daily Telegraph The Bluefield Daily Telegraph Tue Dec 07, 2010, 04:45 PM EST

— The West Virginia Supreme Court on Monday threw out South Charleston’s appeal to keep its last football playoff victory and ended its hopes of playing in the state championship.

The court ruled that a Kanawha County judge overstepped her authority when she allowed four South Charleston players to take part on Nov. 27 in the 29-28 win over Brooke. Officials sought to suspend the four following a fight during a Nov. 19 quarterfinal matchup with Hurricane.

The West Virginia Secondary School Activities Commission immediately awarded the semifinal to Brooke, setting it up with Martinsburg for a championship matchup this Saturday in Wheeling.
