Title: WTF? Rogers Redding to retire?
Post by: RMR on January 01, 2011, 04:11:58 PM
Brent Musburger (I know, consider the source) just said "he's about to become head of officials?"  For the SEC? Seriously?

That has been the inside talk for some time.  Dave Parry retires, RR takes over CFO and stays as editor, SS moves to head of SEC officiating

This doesnt have to do with the topic, but you mentioned Musberger(I refrain from referring to him as I normally do)...

In the Rose Bowl today, he was all concerned during a TCU punt about the gunner's feet touching the goal line as it applied to the ball being downed at the 3. *sigh* You know, as long as he's been calling games, you think he'd have learned a LITTLE about the rules.

And he had Dave Parry in the booth with him.

Musberger is to CFB what Tim McCarver is to baseball

Musburger may not know the rules real well, but he doesn't really dog the officials like other idiot announcers. I don't know if he went to umpire school or just started out calling baseball at the amateur level, but he has officiated -- at least for a time.

I just laugh when I hear all the complaints about BM. No, he isn't the best play by play guy, but he's pretty good. He's a bit over-hype-ing if you will. Sometimes he gets on kicks where you want him to move on. But he's nowhere near as bad as many think he is, and frankly, to me, the complaints about him on message boards are from people trying to show how cool they are (or how enlightened they are) by dogging him. Give it a rest. If you don't like him, fine. But he's ABC's top guy for a reason. On the old NFL Today, he was money. The guys today are unwatchable.

What TX Mike says is true.  It is a done deal, but not officially announced yet.

Joe Stack what games do you listen too? He is one of the worst at dogging officials.

Thank you, Mrs. Musberger.  tiphat:

He did NOT go to any of the professional umpire schools.  He umpired "minor league baseball", which actually was an independent semi-pro league in the Midwest back in the 1950s.  There are plenty of high school umpires that have more training and experience.

I have worked with Mr. Musburger, and let's just say there are plenty of people with whom I would rather work.  PLENTY.

The Parry retire/Rogers take over was the plan two years ago.  Stve Shaw taking over SEC officials is new news.

This was posted in today's online edition of the LA Times. I would thin we are now just waiting for the announcement that Steve Shaw will take over as supervisor.

Why would Steve want to make this move?  As an official, he's considered by many to be best college referee today, and, even in officiating years, he's still a relatively young man.  He is such fun to watch work games, I would hate to see him move to the supervision level.
