Title: Outback Bowl
Post by: OHref71 on January 01, 2011, 05:56:24 PM
Did anyone else hear the coing toss and the Florida captain said defend and the Ref looks at him and said you said you would like to defer your choice.  Nice to see they have that problem in college too.

Good to see the call confirmed.

In our championship game last month, the winning captain elected to kick off.    The R said okay and was about to call it when i (as U) stepped in and confirmed with the Captain that he definately wanted to kick off.  He said "Yes kick off" and his co-captains nodded their heads.

Always need to confirm decisions made in pressure (or any) situations.

At our state meeting (Texas) I bought a new flipping coin. It is in color and one side has the outline of the State of Texas with the flag overlayed and on the other it has an American Eagle in color

I always show the coin to both captains and tell them : This side is "Texas" this side is "Eagle"

Guess what 4 captains called.........................................

Yeah,  tails    hEaDbAnG

Not as stressful as the time I decided to let the silver dollar I used fall to the turf...which was the original astroturf and I watched it roll about 15 feet away.  after I picked it up to show which side it landed on...I couldn't remember what the visitor called....how embarrassing....good thing my umpire remembered....

An eagle has 1 tail.  Texas has quite a few tails.

No TP - I was the Ump - it was the Championship game tho, so i thought the captains may have been a tad confused

My coin is a Canadian silver dollar from the 60's. It has Queen Elizabeth on one side and a canoe on the other.
Works great in German, since their word for heads is 'Kopf'
so I ask if they want
'Kopf or Canoe'

Our association has a custom coin of a player in position to snap the ball.  The heads side is a picture of him from the front; the tails side, his other end.

"Captain, I have out coin here.  This side is heads, and I think you can recognize what this side is."  :)

When I do youth games, after the visitors captain calls "heads (or tails)" I go to the home captain and tell him "he called heads , one of us needs to remember that" ;D...then I toss the coin and hope I catch it.

I always catch the coin on a grass field so there is no dispute as to which side faces up if it lands on a tuft and say if i drop it i will toss it again.  On turf i let it fall to the ground ... but will now reconsider that action.

I announce to all captains the call made by the visiting captain so everyone is on the same  page and the call cannot be recanted.

I definitely catch the coin.  (Or try to, at least.  Fortunately, I haven't dropped it yet.)  "If I drop it, we'll toss it again."

Also known as the "Jerome Bettis is a liar rule".  ;)  I always make a point to ask the captain what his choice is before flipping.
