Title: BCS Champ- Auburn pregame on SUBS
Post by: BoBo on January 10, 2011, 03:02:41 PM
OK driving around and seeing some ESPN pregame hype the keep saying that Auburn is going to stress the substitutions by Oregon and their ability and right to make the proper the changes.

I believe it is two fold: one to get proper personnel on the field and secondly to slow the pace of the game down by Oregon.

Chizik is stressing the umpire needs to be on the ball when subs happen so they can adjust.

Now is this just planting the seed or do you feel this is a legit pregame item.

The umpire coming in on his own or will the white hat decide.

What are the technical parameters according to the book???
one sub, multiple subs??

will be interesting to see how it plays out.

We are seeing a big ten crew correct?

here's my understanding of the national mechanic and what UO is used to - the offense basically controls what the U does and whether we go into the holding pattern.

Two scenarios - offense huddles vs. doesn't huddle:

Huddle - only when offensive subs rush quickly to the LOS to create a defensive disadvantage  (not everytime the offense subs) - the U comes up over the ball, R checks the defense, if no defensives subs coming in he pushes the U off, if defense immediately reacts with subs then the R holds the U for a moment allowing the subs to get in place.

No huddle - the U is always over the ball - R checks the offense and if no subs coming in, pushes the U off; if offensive subs come in, then we go into the scenario above.

(added) - Team A subs enter after huddle breaks - U comes up either on own or upon signal by R - holding pattern - B has chance to match up

Works well and is consistent with the rule and, yes, the Big 10 is working the game - great guys and excellent officials.

They did. Short of a couple of cheap shots they let Auburn by with, one of which should have been an ejection (and I was pulling for Auburn), I thought they were spot on!  tiphat:

I agree, the Auburn player throwing the knee into a Duck Head should have been tossed.  That was worse than throwing a punch.

But otherwise, a well called game.

I will have the video of the suspect ejection play posted in a bit but, in retrospect, I don't think we at home "saw" what actually transpired.  ESPN must have had a huge number of cameras there but this and other plays were either not fully captured or they chose not to replay.

Excellent breakdown of what to do in most cases.
But, what if Team A breaks their huddle, without rushing to the LOS, then gets into a snap formation.  After a pause, 2 or 3 Team A substitutes enter the field of play.  Is the U responsible for recognition and determining whether to move back over the ball?  Or does the R signal the U by assuming the iron cross position.

I liked how the culprit was holding his hands up in mock innocence on the sideline. (Shades of A-Rod standing on 2nd base after he got called out for karate chopping the ball out of bronson arroyo's glove.)

Some might describe that act of holding the hands up differently.  They might say it looks like the burglar, robber, thief, etc who has been caught and is surrendering to the law.     ;)

per the CFO Sept. 29, 2009 printed summary - If A has broken the huddle and a substitute enters, then the holding pattern applies.  The U can come up over the ball on his own or upon the R's diection - often the R is in a better position to view the offense.  I'll update my earlier post.
