Letter: Replace sports officials with parents
As usual sports, even at the high school level, seems to be about money rather than the game.
It’s especially distressing to see at the high school level that the almighty dollar is more important than the desire of young people to participate in the game.
If we changed the current system and made it mandatory for parents to be the referees in order for their children to participate in the game, then we would both save money on the parent volunteers, and the children would benefit by both enjoying the sport and their parents’ involvement.
It’s a sad commentary that the current referees care more about their pocketbooks than the enjoyment of the children in the game, especially for those seniors who are missing their last chance to play for their schools.
Let’s put the children first — fire the referees and have the parents step up to the plate.

Good luck with that, Stephanie.

LOL Yeah, it's all about the money.
Hey Steph, I'll loan you one of my uniforms. You be the white hat and run right out there and start officiating your high school's football games.
Now pardon me while I go check on the construction of my new mansion.........think I'll take the Lamborghini.

We'll see how much everyone will enjoy it when parents start calling games. I give it a week. Give me a break. :-X

I posted a response that hasn't yet appeared on the site. Something along the lines of...
Good luck.
Parents can get a rule/case book at the NFHS website.
If the parents willing to study rules, case plays and mechanics for 20+ hours a week (year round) and take any game they can get (year round) for roughly 5 years, they might become competent VARSITY officials. Too bad little Johnny will be out of HS before they get there and the cycle will start all over again.

Dear Stephanie --
High school athletes are NOT "children".
-
Good luck with that Steph.
If it were to come to fruition, I might actually take a long weekend and fly in my private jet down to La. to watch.

How did you post a response when there is no reference to where this letter came from?

It may be time to start a new reality TV show: "So You Want to be a Sports Official". Stephanie can be the first contestant! hEaDbAnG

You guys remember the movie, I believe it was "The Naked Gun" where the white haired guy Lesley something, stole the home plate umpire's uniform to get on the baseball field to keep a close eye on the queen. He finally got behind the plate and the pitcher threw one right down the gut. The whole stadium got silent and everyone was waiting on his call and after a few moments he said, "UHH Strike??"
that's how I could see Parents becoming officials would go.
As a side note, When the now comfortable, new umpire in the naked gun started break dancing after calling a strike, I almost lost it. funny stuff.

What I find funny about this story is just about two weeks ago there is this small private school here in town and they found out another school was passing through town that day on an off day to in between games. They decided to ask them to play with about 24 hour notice. Needless to say they didnt have enought time to get officials for the game, so they used coaches from the teams to call the game. The game ended in the 3 quarter because a fight broke out on the coart and in the stands with the parents in reguards to how some of the calls were going.... so good luck Steph....
-
Steph, you just go ahead and do that. Get back to me in a year and tell me how successful your pie-in-the-sky proposal worked out.

Parents officiating their own kids' game. Now THERE'S a well thought-out idea. ::)
After the 30-minute delay while they argue who's going to be the white hat, MAYBE the kids will be allowed to play, but don't count on it.

Ya ever tried to scrape up a chain crew from all these qualified, willing and benevolent parents?
-
So who ejects the parent/official when they get into a fight with each other?
