Obviously as a Brit, I have a slightly different take on it. It's a jolly tune - British 18th century drinking song actually. Whenever I am in the US officiating or simply watching a game, I always sing along to the "rockets red glare" part as they were British rockets.
The War of 1812 is one of my interests, I've visited one or two of the historical sites. A rather pointless affair that neither side can take much credit from and it ended in a tie.
The most moving rendition of a national anthem I ever heard was when I officiated at the European U-19 championships in Berlin way back in 1994. France were playing Denmark. The players all lined up for the anthems. The French anthem played and then the German announcer came on the PA and in halting english said that they were very sorry but they couldn't find the CD with the Danish anthem on it. I've met a few Danish folks in my time and you couldnt wish to meet a more laid back easy going bunch, but the Danish coach was spittin' feathers!
He turned to his team and said "Sing!" (I assume that's what he said, it was in Danish :)). They straightened their backs and sang their anthem acapella. By the end of it, the tears were streaming down those young men's cheeks. We were lined up at midfield and I was starting to fill up myself!
They were outclassed by France and lost the game, but I suspect none of those players will ever forget that day.

Are you sure about it being a tie??!!??!! ;) LOL FlAg1
PS God save the Queen!!

It might've been a tie when it was over, but then 'Ol Hickory decided to take out a few Brits for good measure afterwards.... ;)

Heh, heh. :D
1-1-3-b The game is ended and the score is final when the referee so declares.
I figure that in the context of the War of 1812, for referee we can say "Treaty of Ghent". The treaty can be easily summed up as "Well that was dumb! Lets pretend it never happened and put the border back to how it was."
Clearly any fisticuffs after that doesn't count - you guys won at New Orleans, we won at Fort Bowyer.
-
What's really important is that we've long been good friends and have fought together when it's really mattered.
-
Indeed. I think only the Portuguese have been our allies for longer than you guys...
-
Of course anyone in the commonwealth doesn't count. It's not like Canada set fire to the White House or anything...
Don't worry about me - just my regulation issue Canadian inferiority complex.

When you think about it, we really are more than allies. We were the same nation until the revolutionary war, which could more rightly be called a "civil war".

'We'?....What has this got to do with Texans, you were Spanish until both wars were over.;) That's like the US claiming the win at Agincourt and not even Hollywood has gone that far.

I always liked hearing the Italian anthem too when I officiated at international tournements, it's quite jolly and upbeat.
It's like two anthems for the price of one really, halfway through it goes into a different sounding tune.

It depends what you want out of an an anthem. From the point of view of 'firing up the lads' it's got to be the Haka. Technically not the anthem but my heart rate goes up about 10/minute just watching on TV.

I remember the first game i called just a few days after 9/11 we were at a small high school with a small band I remember that when those kids played that song it touched my heart like no time before. I remember tears rolling down my cheek and when it was over i turned to get my captains and noticed alot of wet eyes in the faces of those on my sideline. It was sobering to realize that this was the first time many of us really understood the meaning of those words.

Yeah, there weren't a lot of dry eyes the first game after 9/11 up this way, either. Definitely an emotional experience.

I had a JH game 9/12, it was one of the few JH games I have done where they had the American flag (raised and then lowered to half staff) and played the National Anthem (recorded but that was fine).
I also had a small speach prepared if the coachs started complaining about little things. I was going to say "this is a game, yesterday was serious". I never had to say it as everyone was great.

Our first game on that Friday had packed stands approximately 10,000 in attendance. The home stands had a huge American Flag, probably 50ft by 25 ft., which they passed unfurled from one goal line to the other and back. I did not see most of the return trip for the tears. My crew was the same way. I can't remember having an experience that comes even close.
