Title: "Aiding" the Runner II
Post by: Diablo on September 15, 2011, 08:07:14 AM
I came across these recently.  What are y'all's calls?

3.   http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KTBfQKb5OHk

Last, the classic.  Note the teams, score and time remaining.

First one, although "pushing the pile", is so blatant that I think it should be called.

Second one is pretty clear cut, foul.

Third is a bit technical IMO, I would pass on it.

On the fourth, I have to confess, I didn't see anything resembling aiding the runner...

In #3 I would have flagged it. The D player couldn't bring down the ball carrier because the 'helper' was holding him up.
In the last one #5 had his hands on the QB and gave a little push, but I don't think it was nearly enough.

I would have flagged both 2 and 3.

I'm the first to admit that I don't know where to begin on how to call this.  I am iffy on 2, but 3 is pretty clear cut.  It wasn't called in either game...so that tells me that I shouldnt be calling this at all.  I wish the big timers would realize this as a dilemma for the avocation as it promotes setting aside other rules we don't agree with.  I guess that is how we get rid of bad rules...quit calling it altogether and eventually the coaches (rules committee) will take it out or make it a point of emphasis and demand that we call it.

The way our rules interpreter has told us to enforce this foul is that the only time it should ever come into play is when a teammate of the runner is in front of him and physically pulls him forward.  It should never be called if the teammates are just "adding momentum" from behind.

1. No (can't even SEE the runner)
2 & 3. Hell Yes!  Question: does the replay official have the ability to overturn this base on the obvious?
4. No (didn't see anything)

IMO #2 and #3 is definitely penalties.  #1 - good call for forward progress!

The philosophy is that if the runner is PULLED by a teammate, we will flag this.  1 and 4 are legal, 2 and 3 would definitely be fouls.
