Reed 42, Reno 7: Raiders win battle of unbeaten Northern 4A teams
Written by

For about a quarter and half, it looked like a fairly even matchup.
But then Reed found another gear, cruising to a 42-7 win over Reno in a battle of unbeaten Northern 4A football teams Friday at Reno.
No. 1 Reed improved to 7-0 (7-1 overall) and Reno fell to 6-1 (7-2 overall).
Raiders quarterback A.J. Silva was precise with his passes and quick running. He completed 21-of-33 passes for 185 yards and three scores. He rushed for 103 yards and a score.
Reno coach Dan Avansino said his team needed to play a perfect game to have a chance.
It didn't.
"I don't think we played up to the level, mentally, that we're capable of," Avansino said. "We had a lot of mental errors. To beat a team like Reed, you can't afford to have those situations."
Reed went ahead, 7-0, on a 5-yard pass from Silva to Beau Tittensor and was stopping everything Reno attempted.
But the Huskies recovered a fumble, one of three by the Raiders, and found themselves on the Reed side of the field midway through the second quarter.
JD Cartlidge found Nick Norton in the middle of the field and Norton rambled 31 yards to the Reed 15. Three plays later, Gavin Hill scored from three yards out to tie the game at 7-7.
If the Raiders were worried, it didn't show. After offsetting penalties on a Reed punt, the Raiders had the ball at Reno's 28. Tittensor lost 2 yards on a pass play. But on the next play he was wide open for a 30-yard score.
Three minutes later, Reed's Brandon Covello caught a tipped pass for an interception and three plays later, Kyle Vonschimmelman rambled in from 3 yards out to give Reed a 21-7 lead it took into halftime.
Reed usually scores early and often, so coach Ernie Howren was happy with how his team responded to being challenged early.
"When we got in the locker room, you would have thought we were up 42 points," Howren said. "They knew we had a job to do and we just did it. They looked as cool as ice."
Howren said his team was focused on not giving up points.
"We have up a few points last week, they were a little disappointed. I think sometimes they forget, you go up against good football teams, Manogue's got a good offense, you're going to give up a couple points. They came in with a chip on their shoulder," he said.
Broc Westlake had 107 yards on 11 carries for Reed.
Avansino said Reed's hurry-up offense was not a factor.
"Not as much as them just executing what they do. You prepare for it ,so it wasn't like it was a shock," he said.
He said Reed's athleticism and ability to execute were bigger factors.
Reno executed a couple of quick kicks on third down in the first half to get out of field position deep in its own territory.

They have "Fear the Beard" t-shirts. I asked him about them and he just smiled and said, "I'm flattered, but now I can't shave it off...".
