Title: My quiz for Friday night's pre-game......
Post by: HLinNC on November 03, 2011, 10:44:50 AM
4th and 7 at A/K40, K punts

R20 fields the kick at the R30 yl and begins return.  As he crosses the 50 yl,  R88 blocks K79 in the back at the R47 yl.

K88 tackles and forces R20 OOB at the K37 yl by grabbing the runner's facemask and slinging him.  K52 leads with his helmet and hits R20 OOB.

Quiz ruling: Offsetting fouls, replay down, T or F?

My proposed answer:  false
Not a PSK foul. The BIB is a live ball foul by R88 behind the basic spot.  R will decline the facemask foul by K88 to retain possession.  Enforce R88's BIB from the R47 10 yards to the R37.  Assess the DBPF by K52 15 yards to the K48 yl, 1-10 R.

Check me on this?

Correct me if I'm wrong here, but couldn't R just as easily accept the 15yd facemask penalty on K, forcing a double foul situation on the liveball fouls, and enforce the deadball foul against K52 and replay 4th down from the K-25?

I don't necessarily know why they would want to do that, but isn't that a viable option?

It's not a T or F answer.  It's maybe.

Yes, R can decline K's live ball foul, retain possesion, have their live ball foul enforced, and then the dead ball foul is enforced.

But R can accept K's live ball foul, which WOULD offset the live ball fouls, and force a replay of the down after the enforcement of the DBF.

So better than asking T or F, ask what are R' s choices, and then what are the possible outcomes from R's choice.
