Title: DPI - SDSU vs Louisiana Lafayette - New Orleans Bowl
Post by: mccormicw on December 24, 2011, 10:56:21 AM
I don't have video capability so hopefully Mike will post it for me.  During the play that ends at 1130 of the 4th quarter, DPI is called against UL-Lafayette.  First of all, the view of the play from the end zone is incredible when the flag comes flying from the back judge.  Secondly, I would like to hear opinions on why DPI was called.  Was it early contact?  Did the defender grab the receivers left arm?

Just happened to be watching a replay of the game on ESPNU when your post came in.

Both the BJ and HL had flags on the play.  The EZ replay starts a little late but in the first few frames the defender's right arm is wrapped in front of the receiver just as the ball is released.  The receiver's right arm appears to be restricted back. The defender is clearly beat with his right hand still in front somewhat restricting.  He then let's go with his right arm which by itself could be passed on.  BUT his left arm comes around in front and pulls down the receiver's left arm ("one armed receiver").  The HL has the best view on that action.  Two flags from distinctly different angles.  Correct call.   ^flag

BTW - what the heck is "stemming'?  I've never heard that one before!  I know what was called as the defensive lineman jerked a couple of times and in the judgment of the umpire caused the offensive linemen to move.  Since the defense was not in the NZ, the call was made under "non-football act" 7-1-5-a-4.  But "stemming'?   I guess only RC could come up with that one!  :)

nice horse collar take-down by the defender at the end. Too bad the rules don't allow for that to be called in this case.

Hook and turn early, arm grab late, I like the call.  ^flag

My favorite part watching the penalty flag fly like it was shot out of a gun from the end zone view ^flag.

I think the wing threw on his own with the view of the grabbing of the receiver's left arm which opened up to him.....just my observation.

I'd agree.  Looks like the BJ gets the right arm hook, and a second or two later the wing gets the left hand grab.  Also, when throwing the "rocket flag", isn't the guidance to avoid throwing directly at players?
