Title: Illegal Sub end of Stanford game
Post by: WCFB on January 03, 2012, 12:51:40 AM
TxMike Film request. My recording stopped while i was away and i didnt get the 4th quarter.

About 2 min left in the 4th quarter it looked like OSU had players running off and still had too many players on the field when Stanford snapped the ball. Anyone else see this. The internet where i was watching the game was shotty and i couldnt get into refchat to ask.

Looks like no advantage gained by OSU at all.

I count the 12th man going off the field just as the snap occurs but agree no advantage good no call

The 12th guy is past the coach that's on the field at the 30 yard line!

Watching the Rose Bowl yesterday, Oregon had coaches ON the field during plays on a consistent basis.  On a lot of plays, you couldn't see the white 2 yard band because of all of the coaches standing in it.  I thought Chip Kelly was going to fall on the fumble near the sideline late in the game.

I'd tend to agree that there is no real advantage gained here but the guy who gets off at the snap is actually player #13.  Player #12 is just getting across the sideline well after the snap as the QB who has the ball in his hands turns to look for a possible quick out pass directly to the area where the extra players were.

Agree with NVFOA. And advantage/disadvantage can be more involved than it might seem to be. QB's are reading defenses pre-snap. So with seeing what turn out to be extra players it can easily confuse them and the defense is already at an advantage. In this case the QB is looking left pre-snap and he is seeing 6-7 defenders covering his 3 receivers so it may have actually helped him make his decision that he was going right. But then he does look left again as he gets the snap and then decides to go to his right. So this one worked out. But what if there's no flag and there's an interception? Not all QB's are not as sharp as Luck. But I think any supervisor would support a flag on this one. In fact I believe I'd get dinged if I didn't have one. jmo

I recall seeing a bulletin play that covered a situation like this.  Basically, it stated that if a replaced player was on the field at the snap and his next step would take him off the field it would not be flagged.

As was noted #12 is still about 3-4 yards on the field when the ball is snapped.

The ball appears to be snapped at :17 in the video TXMike posted.  He may be a couple yards inbounds at that point but his next step looks like it takes him out of bounds.  Long strides. :)
