Title: Attending coaching clinics?
Post by: stevegarbs on January 19, 2012, 01:18:15 PM
[Posting this in the Fed section as that is what I work, if it belongs somewhere else please relocate it.]

Curious if any of you have attended clinics that are geared toward the football coach and not the official?  Would we, as officials, benefit from understanding what coaches are teaching their players, what the new developments are in overall offensive, defensive or special team strategies, or the specific positional techniques?

I feel as my playing days retreat further into the past that I may not fully appreciate or understand what teams are trying to accomplish (aside from scoring more points than the other team) and how they are going about doing so.

Any thoughts?   ???

I attend both coaching and officiating clinics.  I think there is more of an advantage for a coach to attend an officiating clinic (focusing on rules and interpretations, not mechanics) than there is for an official to attend a coaching clinic.

Officials would certainly be welcomed at a coaching clinic, but the topics are usually SO specific as to not have applicability to many of your games.  And while I could see some benefit to understanding some offensive schemes (i.e., a true spread offense), I don't see much advantage to learning the finer differences between a 3-4 and a 4-3 front on defense or Tampa 2 coverage vs Cover 2, 3, or 4.

Is officiating discussed at coaching clinics?  Do they have sessions about how to manipulate work with the refs?

No, that's just part of our DNA!

We have a clinic coming up in early February.  Here is just a sampling of the actual titles of some of the sessions:

- Base Alignments & Run Fits for the 3-3 Def
- Hybrid Wing-T 3-Step Quick Passing Game: Quick Throws That Isolate Your Best Receiver with Spacing Concepts to Control Inside & Outside Pressures from Any Formation & Motion
- Neutralize Zone Blitz, Inside & Outside Pressure with 2/3-Man Scat Pkg Using 21, 11, 10 & Empty Personnel, Including 2 & 4 Ball Drills
- Defending the Spread Off from a Multiple 50, Including Adjustments
- The Pistol Off: Theory, Ball Handling & Backfield Techniques
- Implementing the Jet, Counter and Play action passing in the spread offense.
- Establishing Jet Sweep & Keep Passes, Both from Under Center & from the Pistol as the Staple of the Hybrid Wing-T
- Using the Offset Fullback (Tailback) to Get the Numbers & Counters to Keep the Defense Balanced
- The Self-Correct Throwing System, Part 1: Maximizing Passing Accuracy & Efficiency with the Zero Position
- Installing the R4 QB Expert System: Accelerating Defensive Recognition, Decision-Making, & Footwork

I mean, really, as officials, do you care?  And would it help you call a game?

And is it any wonder Coach Bryant was able to peddle his snake oil?  Coaches are like golfers and fishermen: they all want the newest, neatest stuff.  In reality, the issue is usually the archer, not the arrows.

Or, as my brother, who is a better golfer than I, once told me, "Quit spending money on clubs and start spending it on lessons."

AB,
I didn't see the session for the A (12-1) offense!

about the only benefit of going to coaches' clinic, unless I'm missing something, is if they were discussing a new blocking technique or something along those lines. - just to eval, look at, and see how it would/could be twisted into an illegal technique.
