Title: NYG @SF Crew Umpire?
Post by: TampaSteve on January 23, 2012, 08:34:20 AM
I saw U81 (Ellison) working umpire.  Unless I have my wires crossed, wasn't he a swing official this year?
If so it seems unusual the swing official working the Conf champ game, let alone potentially working the SB.
Not taking an inch away from U81 abilities, he's a fellow FL guy. - just seemed unusual that he (I think) was a swing official this year.

He was on Walt Coleman's crew.  Also a swing official would have just as much of a shot at the Conference Champ. games and Super Bowl as any other of the officials.

If I remember correctly he officiated a Super Bowl a few years ago.  I think it was the Steelers-Cardinals.  I'm not sure that being the "swing" means much more than he's got a less predictable schedule.

REPLY: Roy was a swing umpire the year following his Super Bowl. The reason had something to do with the fact that he was coming off a Super Bowl season and he wasn't eligible to return the following year. But I don't remember exactly what it was all about. I work for the same company as Roy, so I'll give him a call and report back.
