Title: Questions on 2011 WAC Pre-season test
Post by: CenTexTM on February 25, 2012, 12:10:13 AM
I was going over some of the old pre-season tests I could find, and came across a few questions on the WAC test that I can't figure out why the stated answer is the right one.  Any takers care to help me see the error of my ways?

101.  Third and five on B15.  While QB A1's pass is in the air toward End A83 in the end zone, A83 steps on the end line with his right foot.  A83 stepped back inbounds in the end zone with his right foot and juggles the ball when B41 shoves him causing him to muff the ball in the air.  B41 intercepts the ball in the end zone and runs to the B4 where he fumbles the ball and it rolls over the sideline at the B6.

The answer on the key provided says A 4&5 @ B15 or Safety on B.  I'm ok with the A 4&5 @ B15 because of the LOD foul for A83 being the first to touch the ball after going out of bounds.  But what did B do to get a safety?  B41 didn't interfere against an eligible receiver, so I don't see a foul there.  The end of the run is the B4, so even when the fumble forward OOB is brought back, it should be B's ball at the B4.  Where am I going wrong?

117.  Third and thirteen on 50.  QB A11 hands off to Back A22 at the A48 and A22 runs to the B48 where B51 trips him causing him to fumble the ball at the B44.  The ball rolls to the B39 where B33 recovers the ball.

The answer on the key provided says A 1&10 @ B34.  I've got nothing.  Isn't tripping legal against the ball carrier?

124.  Fourth and Goal on B7.  With 0:04 remaining in the game the score is tied 20-20.  Kicker A14 attempts a field goal from the B14 which is blocked and the ball rolls to the B23.  B41 recovers the ball and runs to the A16 where he fumbles the ball out of bounds at the A19 (0:00).  During B41's run B57 blocked A37 low at the A33.

The answer in the key is regulation over, games goes to OT.  This one I think I understand, because A will decline the penalty to avoid giving B the opportunity to have an untimed down.  However, for the sake of making sure I understand 3-&-1, if time did not expire, would it be B's ball 1&10 at the A48?  (BS = EOR = A19 because no NZ, foul by team in possession behind BS @ A33, enforce from spot?)

Thanks in advance for any insight.  I've really learned a tremendous amount from the denizens of this forum over the past couple of years, some of it even about football rules!  :bOW

Exactly right.

I agree with you, tripping against the runner is legal as per the exception in 9-1-2, "Exception: Tripping the runner is not a foul." I have a second question to that official answer...why would it ever be at the 34? Even if you enforced tripping which is a 15-yd foul, the ball would be at the 29. I would say it's 1 & 10 at the B39.
