Our instinct normally tells us to get between the players before an altercation becomes physical. This could have been any of us, just trying to manage an on the field conflict. Common sense may tell us we should stand back, throw our flag and take notes; or handle it like a hockey official and wait until they fall to the ground before moving in.

Federation manual currently states that all game officials are to "attempt to stop initial confrontation" if it occurs in that official's area. "If unable to stop altercation, step back and record the uniform number of each player involved and other team personnel."
Of course it leaves open HOW you are to attempt to stop it.
